This is a single-volume history of Islam. The opening chapters briefly discuss the historical background of the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century, through the rise of the Islam in 18th through 20th centuries. The final two chapters cover the significant events of the 1980s and 1990s.

Islam: Continuity and Change in the Modern World

This paper discusses the progressive legal paradigm in renewal Islamic family law in Indonesia. Starting from the complexity of family problems in the contemporary era, the presence of progressive legal thinking is one of the foundations in order to provide certainty and justice in society. The results of this study indicate that legal reform progressive in the field of Islamic family law can be noticed from law enforcement through court decisions. Various judges’ decisions have created jurisprudence and are used as guidelines for Religious Court judges in deciding cases. This can be seen from the decisions of the constitutional justices, including regarding the restrictions on polygamy, the status of children out of wedlock and the age of marriage which was later successfully revised with the issuance of Law 16 of 2019 concerning Amendments to Law 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage. In the context of progressive legal reform in Indonesia, judges use reinterpretation of religious texts (fiqh), and understand the social context of modern society dynamics. For this reason, judges are required to be more courageous not only to be bound textually, but also to put forward the goal of realizing justice and benefit in the midst of society. Thus, the main legal objectives will be realized, namely substantive justice, benefits, and legal certainty because the law is basically for humans, not for the law itself

In recent years, users of satellite networks is increasing, and users of learning hidden  And the effects of the unconscious as a result of the use of satellite data to be transferred is limited. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of unconscious influences satellite networks in changing the attitude of the satellite was done. This research is quasi-experimental pretest - post-test with control group. The study population consisted of all parents participating in the Parents Community School 90-minute experimental satellites were trained on the unconscious effects. Subjects in both groups at the beginning and end of the study using a questionnaire approach were tested using satellites. To analyze the data, analysis of covariance was used. The results of analysis of covariance showed the effects of unconscious cause’s negative attitude of the satellite. So we can unconsciously influence the teaching and learning process in the use of satellites may be hidden causing a negative attitude towards the use of satellites.  District 2 city Safashahr school year was 92%. This article aims at studying Javanese cultural revivalism of Mangkunegara VII, its function, and meaning, within the context of the rise of Islamism in the early 20 th century. Mangkunegara VII was a Mangkunegaran ruler who actively participated in developing Javanese culture. When he was young, he was an essential figure in Budi Utomo, a movement organization that represented Javanese nationalism which was influenced by the complex relations between language awareness, colonialism, modernism, and Islamism. He was also involved in various Kejawen organizations. Using Michel Foucault's discourse theory, this paper argues that Javanese cultural revivalism is a Javanese nationalist success to overcome the excessive radicalism of Islamic discourse. When Islamism arose with their attacks against the abangan, he carried out counter-narratives through Javanese cultural organizations. As a ruler, he was successful in assuming legitimacy from the Mangkunegaran people as well as to influence the Dutch colonial government, and other Javanese nationalists as well.

CULTURAL REVIVALISM OF MANGKUNEGARA VII AND THE ISLAMISM DISCOURSE IN THE EARLY 20th CENTURY

Abstrak: Memotret Polarisasi Politik Persatuan Islam dalam Kasus Mohamad Natsir vs Isa Anshary . Meski sama-sama berasal dari Persis (Persatuan Islam) dan berafiliasi pada Masyumi, Mohamad Natsir dan Isa Anshary memiliki perbedaan pandangan politik yang cukup tajam, yang terpenting di antaranya tentang dasar negara, antara Islam dan Pancasila. Memang, keduanya sama-sama menginginkan negara Indonesia berdasarkan Islam. Namun Natsir memiliki sikap yang lebih lentur daripada Isa Anshary. Tak pelak perbedaan sikap kedua tokoh itu berimbas pada organisasi mereka, Persis. Tulisan ini mencoba mengkaji pemikiran keduanya terkait posisi Islam dan Pancasila sebagai dasar negara, latar belakang dan implikasinya terhadap Persatuan Islam. Dari kajian yang dilakukan ditemukan bahwa perbedaan pandangan politik mereka didasari oleh latar belakang sosio-historis dan pengalaman politik yang berbeda. Sikap Natsir yang moderat disebabkan oleh pengalaman terlibat dalam pemerintahan. Sementara Isa Anshary lebih kaku karena pengalaman hidupnya selama Revolusi Fisik dan pengalaman politiknya di luar pemerintahan. Kajian ini mengimplikasikan bahwa sikap politik elite Persis sangat beragam dan tidak monolitik. Kata Kunci: PERSIS, Masyumi, negara, Pancasila, Natsir, Isa Anshary Abstract: Despite having similar background Persatuan Islam and affiliated to Masyumi Party, Mohammad Natsir and Isa Anshary have quite different political view. One of the most significant differences is their view on the foundation of the country, between Islam and Pancasila. Both of these figures had actually proposed Indonesia to base on Islam. However, Natsir’s attitude on this issue is more flexible than that of Isa Anshary’s, which ultimately have impact on their organization. This article examines the differences of these two figures related to their position on Islam and Pancasila as the basis of the country, the background and implication of their differences on PERSIS. This study concludes that their political differences stemmed from their socio-historic and political experience differences. Natsir’s moderate atttidue is due to his experience of being involved in government practices. Meanwhile, Isa Anshary’s is more uncompromising due to his experience during Physical Revolution and his political experience outside the government system. Portraying political polarization in persatuan islam in the case of mohamad natsir vs isa anshari

This article examines the debates between the Islamic group and secular nationalist group during pre Independence era on the the relationship between Islam and the state. The major factors stimulating the conflicts in conceiving the relationship between Islam and the state among Indonesian politicians was not about the disparity of the level of religiosity. Instead, it signifies the faiule of the political elites in reconciling different political views among Indoensians, as if Islam and nationalism are different and conflicting concepts. This article, therefore, discusses the ideas proposed by these two competing groups, Islamist and nationalist, and their ideological inclination. In particular, this article sees to what extent the Islamic group contributed to the state formation after Independence era. Keywords: Islam, the state, secularnationalist, ideology.

Tulisan ini melakukan kajian ulang secara kritis terhadap teori-teori usul fikih yang selama ini telah memasung fikih menjadi sekedar kumpulan hukum statis yang tidak bisa berbicara apa-apa terhadap problem masyarakat. Tulisan ini akan memaparkan pemikiran fikih baru yang berasal dari para pemikir Islam progresif-revolusioner, seperti misalnya Ali Syariati dan  Hassan Hanafi. Dalam tulisan ini akan dielaborasi lebih lanjut sebagai sebuah tulisan utuh tentang konsep fikih progresif-revolusioner dengan berangkat dari pokok-pokok masalah sebagai berikut: Pertama, tentang apa yang menjadi tujuan dan orientasi fikih progresif-revolusioner. Kedua, tentang bagaimana rekonstruksi usul fikih untuk mendukung bangunan fikih progresif-revolusioner. Dan ketiga, tentang apa yang menjadi proyek strategis revolusi sosial dalam rangka menggerakkan fikih progresif-revolusioner dalam dataran praksis. Fikih progresif-revolusioner adalah alternatif atas kebekuan ajaran Islam dewasa ini yang telah dikungkung oleh bentuk-bentuk pemikiran konservatif yang selalu mempertahankan sesuatu yang sudah mapan. Fikih progresif-revolusioner merupakan bentuk progresifisme pemikiran Islam yang ingin mengembalikan misi ajaran Islam pada otentisitasnya, yaitu semangat pembebasan. Membebaskan umat dari bentuk-bentuk penindasan dan kesewenang-wenangan yang telah membuat umat menjadi sengsara dengan kemiskinannya dan keterbelakangannya.

Rekonstruksi pemikiran fikih: mengembangkan fikih progresif-revolusioner

Purpose: This article attempts to examine the point of the meeting by taking the case of Yogyakarta Palace as a point of discussion.
Methodology: From the discussion about the process and the meaning of Islamization of Javanese culture and the indigenization of Islam, it can be seen that the core concept in the politics of Yogyakarta Palace, as a representation of Javanese Islamic politics, is Islam, because the Palace is a manifestation as well as a representative and subordinate of the divine power.
Result: The use of the title of “Senopati ing Alaga Abdurrahman Sayyidin Panatagama Khalifatullah” by sultans in Yogyakarta is not without meaning. This title shows and proves the above assumptions. In the perspective of state politics, Yogyakarta does not separate between state and religion, between din (religion) and dawlah (state). The indigenization of Islam in the context of the Yogyakarta tradition has reached the harmonization of Islamic normatively and the historicity of human culture.
Applications: This research can be used for universities, teachers, and students.
Novelty/Originality: The meeting of two cultures often leads to two choices, elimination or acculturation. This also applied to the meeting between Islam and Javanese culture. One aspect that experienced a long process in the Islamization of Java was related to political and power issues.
