Robert W. Rydell contends that America's early world's fairs actually served to legitimate racial exploitation at home and the creation of an empire abroad. He looks in particular to the \"ethnological\" displays of nonwhites-set up by showmen but endorsed by prominent anthropologists-which lent scientific credibility to popular racial attitudes and helped build public support for domestic and foreign policies. Rydell's lively and thought-provoking study draws on archival records, newspaper and magazine articles, guidebooks, popular novels, and oral histories.

In the depths of the Great Depression, when America's future seemed bleak, nearly 100 million people visited expositions celebrating the \"century of progress.\" These fairs fired the national imagination and served as cultural icons on which Americans fixed their hopes for prosperity and power. In \"All the World's a Fair\", Robert W. Rydell described how Victorian-era world's fairs helped create a blueprint for modern America. Now, with \"World of Fairs\", he shows how the interwar exhibitions heralded the arrival of modern America - a new empire of abundance built on old foundations of inequality. Rydell demonstrates how the fairs reached their height of popularity following the crash of 1929 by offering a vision of recovery from the Depression through the united powers of science and industry. Beneath the surface, however, lay persistent themes of imperialism and racism as government officials, industrial leaders, and intellectuals alike used the fairs to reinforce their own authority and the established social order. Rydell revisits several fairs, highlighting the 1926 Philadelphia Sesquicentennial Exposition, the 1931 Paris Colonial Exposition, the 1933-34 Chicago Century of Progress Exposition, the 1935-36 San Diego California Pacific Exposition, the 1936 Dallas Texas Centennial Exposition, the 1937 Cleveland Great Lakes and International Exposition, the 1939-40 San Francisco Golden Gate International Exposition, the 1939-40 New York World's Fair, and the 1958 Brussels Universal Exposition.

Methods and tools to develop sustainable products are ever more required by companies to balance the efficiency of its operations with its responsibilities for environmental and social actions. This work aims at achieving improved products along its production stage by the application of a methodology, which consists of three different phases: (i) sustainability assessment; (ii) product redesign; (iii) comparing designs. Different impacts are assessed, sustainability strategies are proposed and more sustainable design alternatives are projected. The procedure is supported by the use of engineering metrics and sustainability indicators, conveniently selected to quantitatively measure the three dimensions of the sustainability: environmental, economic and social. The methodology is implemented in two case studies. First, the manufacturing process of an airbrush is analyzed. Next, the cow milk production in a dairy farm is studied. Strategies to reduce impacts and to achieve an improvement in the sustainability performance of the product are addressed in each case. Both, environmental and socio-economic improvements, are obtained. Thus, a practical method to carry out sustainability-oriented decision making in production processes is developed.

A practical methodology to project the design of more sustainable products in the production stage

The development of product–service systems (PSS) is currently considered a promising solution to the challenge of sustainability. Nevertheless, the sustainability of these systems has not been systematically assessed and there is a need to develop more guiding principles. In this work, an approach based on the flows between product and service systems is used to facilitate both the definition of PSS boundaries and the identification of links between the systems involved. In addition, the life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) method is applied to simultaneously quantify environmental, economic and social impacts. Two cases are analysed. First, the production process of cow´s milk, in which a veterinary service is required, is studied using data measured from a dairy farm. Next, the sustainability of a clothing retail service taking, into account that a construction product is involved in its creation stage, is evaluated. In each PSS specific life cycle, stages are analysed, a functional unit referred to both products and services is defined, and quantitative indicators are selected to assess each sustainability dimension. The category of workers is selected to evaluate social aspects. The relative incidence of each system is evaluated and the impacts of different factors on the PSS sustainability are analysed.

Sustainability Assessment of Product–Service Systems Using Flows between Systems Approach

Este trabajo tiene por objeto analizar las expectativas personales, formativas y profesionales que se plantean los estudiantes del Grado en Ingenieria en Diseno Industrial y Desarrollo de Producto. Se trata de una titulacion relativamente joven dentro de la rama de la Ingenieria, precursora en la introduccion de los Grados, y que cuenta actualmente con una elevada tasa de solicitud de acceso por parte de los estudiantes. Dada la actual situacion de cambio social, se pretende conocer cuales son los objetivos que tienen los estudiantes y en que medida se cumplen; que percepcion tienen sobre la adquisicion de competencias desarrolladas a lo largo del Grado y las demandadas por las empresas; que capacidades creen que son necesarias en sus profesores y en que nivel son logradas, y finalmente, cuales son sus expectativas de futuro profesional en un contexto de incertidumbre. Para ello, se ha realizado una encuesta que incluye una muestra representativa de estudiantes de todos los cursos del Grado. Los resultados se han estructurado en tres bloques que analizan las caracteristicas basicas de los estudiantes, el desarrollo competencial y las expectativas profesionales.  El estudio realizado pone de manifiesto que el futuro profesional marca las expectativas formativas de los estudiantes, los cuales perciben que el nivel de exigencia del desarrollo competencial en el Grado se aproxima con el demandado por las empresas.

Objetivos, competencias y expectativas de futuro profesional de los estudiantes del Grado en Ingeniería en Diseño Industrial y Desarrollo de Producto.

This paper presents the state of teaching experience conducted during the last seven years by a group of teachers. These professors simultaneously teach five subjects in the framework of the EHEA of the Degree of Engineering of Industrial Design and Product Development at the University of Zaragoza. The applied teaching methodology includes guarantee of teaching quality and learning system based on series of indicators that have been defined and improved over the years. This document reflects the results of the module work during the last academic year 2015-2016, during which the follow-up of group work has been implemented based on meeting records of the group meetings. In these meeting records the students have reflected the evolution of their work and the agreements taken, being supervised regularly by the teachers. As a result of this action, a substantial improvement has been achieved in the functioning of working groups that, due to their particular circumstances, could be problematic, allowing the teaching team greater control of internal conflicts. Additionally, the system also serves a second objective: fostering leadership in the group by rewarding the individual final grade for proactive behavior and punishing dishonest behaviors among peers.
