Journal ArticleDOI

On the application of a membrane air—liquid contactor for air dehumidification

TL;DR: In this article, a hydrophobic synthetic membrane, permeable to vapour but not to liquid, acts as a porous barrier between a hygroscopic solution and moist air, and the results show that considerable vapour flux can be exchanged to/from a liquid desiccant and an air stream through the membrane, suggesting the feasibility of using compact-membrane absorber and desorber units in air handling.
Journal ArticleDOI

From nearly zero energy buildings (NZEB) to positive energy buildings (PEB): The next challenge - The most recent European trends with some notes on the energy analysis of a forerunner PEB example

TL;DR: A critical review of the main actions of the European Union towards the development of the NZEB and PEB design models has been conducted and a case study is presented to show how a careful and integrated design of the building envelope and systems allows to obtain an almost total coverage of the energy consumption by renewable sources.
Journal ArticleDOI

Water Production from Air Conditioning Systems: Some Evaluations about a Sustainable Use of Resources

TL;DR: In this article, a preliminary study regarding an integrated HVAC system is presented, which combines air conditioning and water extraction from air, which was particularly focused on the optimization between the two said effects, also taking energy efficiency into account.
Journal ArticleDOI

The energy performance improvement of historic buildings and their environmental sustainability assessment

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present results of a multi-disciplinary research on a representative case study, the huge historical complex of the Albergo dei Poveri of Genoa (XVII-XIX Century), which will be completely restored and reused as a university campus.
Journal ArticleDOI

Towards a systematic approach for energy refurbishment of historical buildings. The case study of Albergo dei Poveri in Genoa, Italy

TL;DR: In this article, a feasibility study for a huge historical listed building, aiming at its progressive and complete re-utilization as university campus, respectful of the many cultural values of which it is the depository, is presented.
