The plurality of portable devices are detachably attached to the ports. The current detector detects a current drawn to each of the plurality of portable devices when the plurality of portable devices are attached to the ports. The power supply controller prevents a current of a first threshold or more from being drawn to a first portable device other than a predetermined number of portable devices among the plurality of portable devices, when the current drawn to each of the predetermined number of portable devices is the first threshold or more.

The portable charging apparatus includes a first Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface connected to an external charging device, a second USB interface connected to a mobile communication terminal, and a switch located between data lines for USB communication. An ESD avoiding circuit includes a first ESD protection unit, an ESD detection unit, a switch unit, and an RC filter unit. The first ESD protection unit transmits an ESD current between a first conducting path and a second conducting path. The ESD detection unit is coupled to the first conducting path. The ESD detection unit includes an input terminal, and an output terminal coupled to the first ESD protection unit for detecting an ESD and controlling the first ESD protection unit to conduct the ESD current according to a detection result. The switch unit is coupled between the first conducting path and a core circuit and conducts the first conducting path to the core circuit according to signals of the input terminal and the output terminal of the ESD detection unit. The RC filter unit couples a first voltage to the input terminal of the ESD detection unit.

PMOS electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection device

Disclosed are a mobile terminal capable of effectively discriminating a mobile terminal charger so as to set an appropriate charge current, and a method for charging a charge current thereof. To this end, when a charger (e.g., Travel Adaptor (TA)) is inserted via a cable (50), a short-circuited state of a data pin of the charger is checked such that a route is switched to form a closed loop defined by data pins and provided with predetermined power when the data pin of the charger (TA) is in the short-circuited state, and the voltage applied to the formed closed loop is compared with a predetermined reference value, thereby determining a type of the charger. Therefore, when various types of chargers are inserted in the mobile terminal via a cable (50), the corresponding type of charger is determined so as to set an appropriate charge current, resulting in ensuring a fast charging operation and minimizing damage on the charger.

Multi-mode charger device for charging portable devices and methods of charging portable devices are described. In an embodiment, a multi-mode charger device has mode blocks respectively associated with modes of operation which are coupled to a switch module. The switch module is for coupling a selected one of the mode blocks to a peripheral bus and to decouple the mode blocks remaining from the peripheral bus. A first mode of the modes of operation is a pass through mode. A second mode of the modes of operation is a first charging mode. A third mode of the modes of operation is a second charging mode. The first charging mode and the second charging mode are different from one another.

Multi-mode charger device

Pin-to-pin electro-static-discharge (ESD) protection is provided for a bus-switch transistor that is connected to I/O pins at its source and drain. A p-type substrate is normally pumped below ground by a substrate bias generator when power is applied. However, during a pin-to-pin ESD test, power and ground are floating. A gate node is pulled high through a coupling capacitor by the ESD pulse. The gate node turns on a shunting transistor to couple the ESD pulse to the floating ground bus. The gate node also turns on a shorting transistor that connects the floating ground bus to the floating substrate. A resistor drains the coupling capacitor to the substrate, rather than to ground. Current is injected into the substrate by the resistor. The snapback voltage is lowered by substrate-triggering.

Substrate-triggering of ESD-protection device

High-frequency analog designs need to make trade-off between performance and sufficient ESD protection due to unwanted parasitics which slow down the circuit. An HBM failure diagnosis on a chip without complete ESD protection achieves silicon correlation with a full-chip dynamic ESD simulation. An innovative critical path tracing technique for diagnosis assistance is also described.
