A polyphasic multi-coil generator includes a driveshaft, at least first and second rotors rigidly mounted on the driveshaft so as to simultaneously synchronously rotate with rotation of the driveshaft, and at least one stator sandwiched between the first and second rotors. The stator has an aperture through which the driveshaft is rotatably journalled. A stator array on the stator has an equally circumferentially spaced-apart array of electrically conductive coils mounted to the stator in a first angular orientation about the driveshaft. The rotors and the stator lie in substantially parallel planes. The first and second rotors have, respectively, first and second rotor arrays.

The placement of fully available prime movers having a DC output at a location inside or adjacent to an inverter-based intermittently available renewable energy site is disclosed. The fully available prime movers add reliability to an unreliable energy asset that is reaching its maximum penetration within the grid due to its unpredictability and the requirement for additional spinning reserves in other parts of the grid. The present invention can provide a portion or all of the power to an intermittently available renewable power generating facility so that the power output to the power grid is dispatchable power. In particular, a method and means are disclosed to utilize high-efficiency engines operated on various fuels some of which may be non-fossil fuels to maintain a constant power output from an otherwise intermittent power generating facility.

Dispatchable power from a renewable energy facility

The present invention combines the principles of a gas turbine engine with an electric transmission system. A method and apparatus are disclosed for utilizing metallic and ceramic elements to store heat energy derived from a regenerative braking system. The subject invention uses this regenerated electrical energy to provide additional energy storage over conventional electrical storage methods suitable for a gas turbine engine. The subject invention provides engine braking for a gas turbine engine as well as reducing fuel consumption.

Polyphasic multi-coil electric device

This paper presents the development of a robust starting system for a microturbine (MT) with a single-shaft structure. Because the operating speed for the ignition and motoring of an MT is close to several tens of thousands of revolutions per minute, stable high-speed operation of the high-speed motor-generator (HSMG) is a critical issue in realizing a starting system for a single shaft. A sensorless vector inverter was developed for this high-speed operation. To successfully start an MT with the developed starter in practice, two new starting algorithms were proposed. One is a constant power output control algorithm that can maintain a perfect motoring schedule with significantly deteriorated performance of the input battery power in a vehicle under an extremely low temperature and severe engine drag. The other is a new reliable ignition verification logic that uses the inverter output current when the exhausted gas temperature sensor does not work properly. Since the two proposed algorithms are derived from the torque and q-axis current formulas for the vector drive, no additional hardware is required to apply them to an existing MT. In this paper, a single-shaft MT with a 10-kW inverter, 6-kW booster converter, and 25-kW HSMG was developed, and the proposed algorithms were applied to motoring. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithms, experiments were carried out under variable conditions, such as extremely low temperature (-32°C) and room temperature. The MT has used in a military truck for supplying electrical power and bleeding air.

Development of Robust Starting System Using Sensorless Vector Drive for a Microturbine

A method for ignition and start up of a gas turbine engine in which the fuel flow is supplied to the combustor at a substantially constant rate for ignition and the gas turbine engine is ramped up at a preset acceleration rate to a speed to provide a supply of combustion air to the combustor in order to achieve the correct fuel-to-air ratio for ignition.
