Domain-specific modeling languages (DSMLs) promise clear advantages over general-purpose modeling languages. However, their design poses a fundamental challenge. While economies of scale advocate the development of DSMLs that can be used in a wide range of cases, modeling productivity demands more specific language concepts tuned to individual requirements. Inspired by the actual use of technical languages (German: “Fachsprachen”), this paper presents a novel multilevel modeling approach to conceptual modeling and to the design of information systems. Unlike traditional language architectures such as Meta Object Facility (MOF), it features a recursive architecture that allows for an arbitrary number of classification levels and, hence, for the design of hierarchies of DSMLs ranging from reference DSMLs to “local” DSMLs. It can not only diminish the conflict inherent in designing DSMLs, but enables the reuse and integration of software artifacts in general. It also helps reduce modeling complexity by relaxing the rigid dichotomy between specialization and instantiation. Furthermore, it integrates a meta-modeling language with a metamodel of a reflective meta-programming language, thereby allowing for executable models. The specification of the language architecture is supplemented by the description of use scenarios that illustrate the potential of multilevel modeling and a critical discussion of its peculiarities.

Multilevel Modeling: Toward a New Paradigm of Conceptual Modeling and Information Systems Design

The paper describes a model-integrated approach for embedded software development that is based on domain-specific, multiple-view models used in all phases of the development process. Models explicitly represent the embedded software and the environment it operates in, and capture the requirements and the design of the application, simultaneously. Models are descriptive , in the sense that they allow the formal analysis, verification, and validation of the embedded system at design time. Models are also generative, in the sense that they carry enough information for automatically generating embedded systems using the techniques of program generators. Because of the widely varying nature of embedded systems, a single modeling language may not be suitable for all domains; thus, modeling languages are often domain-specific. To decrease the cost of defining and integrating domain-specific modeling languages and corresponding analysis and synthesis tools, the model-integrated approach is applied in a metamodeling architecture, where formal models of domain-specific modeling languages-called metamodels-play a key role in customizing and connecting components of tool chains. This paper discusses the principles and techniques of model-integrated embedded software development in detail, as well as the capabilities of the tools supporting the process. Examples in terms of real systems will be given that illustrate how the model-integrated approach addresses the physical nature, the assurance issues, and the dynamic structure of embedded software.

Model-integrated development of embedded software

The Third Edition of Applied Metamodelling represents a small increment since the Second Edition was produced in 2008. The book continues to be referenced in schol- arly articles with 212 citations on Google Scholar including nearly 150 since 2008. The open-source release of the accompanying technologies XMF and XMF-Mosaic did not generate the same level of interest, partly due to a lack of exposure and associated tuto- rial materials. Recently, interest in the field of multi-level modelling has increased and has led to publications and a Dagstuhl Seminar based on the ideas of meta-languages and tool-modelling. An overview of the historical development of XMF, the ideas in this book, and the the birth and death of an associated startup company has been published in 2012 as part of the 10th anniversary edition of the the Journal of Software and Systems Modeling. A project based on the foundations developed in this book and the tooling, now rebranded XModeler, is underway and the aim is to advance the field of multi-level language-based system engineering.

Meta-modelling is at the core of Model-Driven Engineering, where it is used for language engineering and domain modelling. The OMG's Meta-Object Facility is the standard framework for building and instantiating meta-models. However, in the last few years, several researchers have identified limitations and rigidities in such a scheme, most notably concerning the consideration of only two meta-modelling levels at the same time.

In this paper we present METADEPTH, a novel framework that supports a dual linguistic/ontological instantiation and permits building systems with an arbitrary number of meta-levels through deep metamodelling. The framework implements advanced modelling concepts allowing the specification and evaluation of derived attributes and constraints across multiple meta-levels, linguistic extensions of ontological instance models, transactions, and hosting different constraint and action languages.

The MMF approach to engineering object-oriented design languages.

The OMG’s Model Driven Architecture (MDA) initiative has been the focus of much attention in both academia and industry, due to its promise of more rapid and consistent software development through the increased use of models. In order for MDA to reach its full potential, the ability to manipulate and transform mod- els – most obviously from the Platform Independent Model (PIM) to the Platform Specific Models (PSM) – is vital. Recognizing this need, the OMG issued a Request For Proposals (RFP) largely concerned with finding a suitable mechanism for trans- forming models. This paper outlines the relevant background material, summarizes the approach taken by the QVT-Partners (to whom the authors belong), presents a non-trivial example using the QVT-Partners approach, and finally sketches out what the future holds for model transformations.
