TL;DR: The origins and course of a controversy in French sociology revolving around the question: what contributions can sociology make to the analysis of suicide?
Abstract: MY PURPOS ES in this paper are the following: (I) to describe the origins and the course of a controversy in French sociology revolving around the question: what contributions can sociology make to the analysis of suicide?, (2) to examine critically certain of the issues arising out of the controversy; (3) to offer some suggestions concerning the direction which research into suicide should take in the future. The suicide controversy in French sociology, which reached its peak in the period between the two world wars, centred particularly around the thesis advanced by Durkheim in Le Suicide, but its beginnings can be traced much further back.' It is not generally realized today, in fact, how far Durkheim's work itself was grounded in previous studies of suicide produced by earlier nineteenth-century writers.
