Introduction To The Theory And Practice Of Econometrics

This study investigated the determinants of bank savings in Nigeria as well as examined the impact of bank savings and bank credits on Nigeria’s economic growth from 1970-2006. We adopted two impact models; Distributed Lag-Error Correction Model (DL-ECM) and Distributed Model. The empirical results showed a positive influence of values of GDP per capita (PCY), Financial Deepening (FSD), Interest Rate Spread (IRS) and negative influence of Real Interest Rate (RIR) and Inflation Rate (INFR) on the size of private domestic savings. Also a positive relationship exists between the lagged values of total private savings, private sector credit, public sector credit, interest rate spread, exchange rates and economic growth. We therefore recommend, among others, that government’s effort should be geared towards improving per capita income by reducing the unemployment rate in the country in a bid to accelerate growth through enhanced savings.

Bank Savings and Bank Credits in Nigeria: Determinants and Impact on Economic Growth

This research work examines the inflation and unemployment nexus in Nigeria by testing if the original Phillips curve proposition holds for Nigeria. The study adopted a distributed lag model with data covering the period 1970-2011. The consumer’s price index (a measure of inflation rate), was regressed on unemployment rate, growth rate of money supply, budget deficit, real gross domestic product, interest rate and the lag of current interest rate. The result reveals that unemployment is a significant determinant of inflation and that there is a positive relationship between inflation and unemployment rate in Nigeria. This finding invalidates the original proposition on the Phillips curve hypothesis in Nigeria. The study therefore recommends that the economy should be diversified and appropriate policies should be put in place by Government and the monetary authorities in order to curb the menace of inflation and unemployment and consequently reduce the problem of stagflation in Nigeria. Again, there is a need for strong institutional collaboration in dealing with these two macroeconomic variables; unemployment and inflation as have been recommended in the paper.

Inflation And Unemployment Nexus In Nigeria: Another Test of the Phillips Curve

Using the Seemingly Unrelated Regression Estimation (SURE) technique, we examine the implications of four different types of foreign capital inflows, namely; Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Official Development Assistance (ODA), Foreign Private Investment (FPI) and Remittances (REM) on output growth of the West Africa Monetary Zone (WAMZ) economies over the period 1981-2010. Our results show that there are differences in the growth impact of the various forms of foreign capital inflows in the WAMZ countries. The result also shows that more than one form of capital inflow contributed positively to output growth in Nigeria. Again, we find that ODA positively contributes more to output growth in Sierra Leone and Ghana, whereas, FDI foster more output growth in Nigeria and Gambia.  Remittances have the highest contribution in Liberia and finally none of the inflows has positively impacted on Guinea’s economic growth. We therefore recommend that WAMZ countries should endeavor to create competitive economic environments that will be attractive to foreign investors since promoting trade and investment through sound economic policies and strengthened institutions are essential in maximizing the benefits from Foreign Capital Inflows in the region.
