In a nitride type compound semiconductor light emitting element, a phosphor layer is formed in a multilayer constituting the light emitting element. A highly-reflective layer is formed at a side plane of the light emitting element. The nitride type compound semiconductor light emitting element can emit white light or multi-colored light, and is superior in mass production and reliability. The wavelength of the emitted light can be converted into a different wavelength by the light emitting element alone.

A barrier layer of an electrically conductive material such as indium oxide (In2O3), optically transparent to x-ray phosphor luminescence, is disposed between the phosphor layer and photocathode film of an x-ray image intensifier tube to provide sufficient electrical sheet conductance relative to the photocathode film. The barrier layer provides electron replenishment to the photocathode at all points of electron emission therefrom to thereby reduce potential drop laterally across the photocathode from the ring electrode to the center of the photocathode, and also minimizes surface irregularities on the phosphor layer to thereby significantly reduce electron-optic image distortion in the image intensifier tube.

A luminescent composition which is a uniform admixture of a least one phosphor having a particle size of about "one-half" micrometers or less and at least one sol gel compound in an amount sufficient to substantially encapsulate the phosphor. Luminous devices are formed by disposing this composition on a substantially transparent substrate. The use of particulate phosphors in an encapsulating medium protects the phosphor and provides dielectric strength or conduction as required. Improved luminous devices for displays and lighting are provided such as those finding use as flat panel displays and for backlights for liquid crystal flat panel displays.

The screen includes a nucleation to achieve the uniform disposition of an oxidizable metal which when subsequently heated forms the metallic oxide of the separation layer.

[Also in Division H1] A luminescent screen of the type comprising a first phosphor 15 1 excitable by a high-velocity electron beam and separated by a barrier layer 25 1 from a second phosphor 27 excitable by a low velocity electron beam, is characterized in 'that the barrier layer 25 is a conductive oxide, of one or more of copper, silver, zinc, cadmium gallium, indium, germanium and tin. In one method of making the screen the phosphor layer 15 1 is coated with a heat decomposable material, such as a lacquer solution, to provide a smooth surface on which a nucleating material such as silver, tin, aluminium, or chromium is evapor- 'ated. The barrier material, e.g. cadmium, is evaporated on to the nucleate and the screen is heated to 400‹ C. for forty-five minutes to remove the lacquer material and to convert the cadmium layer to cadmium oxide having a thickness of about 800 S.U. This layer is conductive and is connected to a graphite wall coating 37. Finally the second phosphor layer 27 is deposited on the barrier layer. The first phosphor may be Zn 2 SiO 4 : Mn and the second YVO 4 : Eu.
