TL;DR: In this article, the authors numerically study polarization-mode dispersion in fiber routes with a finite number of degrees of freedom, and show that individual channels in such systems exhibit a non-Maxwellian differential group delay distribution, and analyze the resulting statistics of outage probabilities.
Abstract: We numerically study polarization-mode dispersion in fiber routes with a finite number of degrees of freedom, show that individual channels in such systems exhibit a non-Maxwellian differential group delay distribution, and analyze the resulting statistics of outage probabilities. We show that a significant number of channels in such systems will be outage-free for long time periods.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors study the statistics of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD)-induced system penalty in optical telecommunication systems and show that in systems with few hinges, a smaller margin to PMD will result in the same outage probability.
Abstract: We study the statistics of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD)-induced system penalty in optical telecommunication systems. First, we extend the analysis from Maxwellian fiber-to-fiber routes with a finite number of degrees of freedom, or "hinges". Second, we take into account higher order terms in the optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty beyond the standard approximation. Our results show that in systems with few hinges, a smaller margin to PMD will result in the same outage probability.

TL;DR: The exact analytical expression for the autocorrelation function of the polarization mode dispersion vector of a fiber link in which first-order PMD is compensated for at the output is given.
Abstract: We give the exact analytical expression for the autocorrelation function of the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) vector of a fiber link in which first-order PMD is compensated for at the output. We use the result to obtain the mean-square width of a Gaussian pulse in the presence of a first-order PMD compensator.

TL;DR: In this article, an analytical expression for the PMD-induced pulse broadening was derived for the center frequency of the pulse at which PMD vector at center frequency is applied.
Abstract: We derive an analytical expression for the PMD-induced pulse broadening, given the PMD vector at centre frequency, and show it can be used for an accurate prediction of the experimentally observed PMD-induced power penalty. (2 pages)

TL;DR: In this article, the performance of a broadband polarization-mode dispersion mitigation technique for wavelength-division-multiplexing systems based on a single polarization rotator placed in various positions along the span was analyzed.
Abstract: We analyze the performance of a broad-band polarization-mode-dispersion (PMD) mitigation technique for wavelength-division-multiplexing systems based on a single polarization rotator placed in various positions along the span. We show that the PMD-induced penalty can be significantly reduced.
