Methods and apparatus for delivery of packetized content (e.g., video, audio, data, etc.) over a content delivery network. In one embodiment, the content is packetized using an Internet Protocol (IP), and delivered by a service provider over both managed and unmanaged networks to subscribers of the provider, so as to provide delivery at any time, at any location, and via any designated user device. The delivered content may originate from the service provider, third-party content sources (e.g., networks or studios), the subscriber(s) themselves, or other sources including the Internet. Use of a common control and service functions within the network afford the ability to integrate or blend services together, thereby affording the service provider and subscriber new service and economic opportunities. Content delivery sessions may also be migrated from one device to another. A network-based user interface infrastructure, and gateway-based client-side architecture, are also disclosed.

Methods and apparatus for packetized content delivery over a content delivery network

Methods and apparatus for delivering content over network infrastructure are disclosed. In one embodiment, the network comprises a content-based (e.g., cable) network coupled to a radio or other service provider network, and a portion of the infrastructure comprises that nominally used for on-demand (OD) services such as VOD. Mobile or other consumer devices (e.g., cellular telephones, PDAs, etc.) capable of accessing the service provider network are able to access the on-demand and related “trick mode” functionality of the content-based network, as well as make use of ancillary functions such as billing modules associated with the content network.

Method and apparatus for on-demand content transmission and control over networks

In another variant, reservation information (for example program or asset ID information) is cached at a headend or hub server, thereby obviating the subscriber (or the network) having to access the subscriber's premises device. In yet another variant, a “virtual” CPE experience is provided for the remote user.

In one embodiment, a personal content server streams the content to the subscriber over a network connection from the local e.g., (subscription) network to a remote network upon authorization by a content manager process. Various access, business or operational rules are applied depending on the content and delivery mode; e.g., to live video broadcast, video-on-demand (VOD), or archived content from the subscriber's digital video recorder (DVR) or networked PVR. Secondary content (e.g., promotions, advertisements, etc.) can also be selectively replaced if desired in order to make the remotely delivered content more appropriate to the remote user's context.

Methods and apparatus for selecting, purchasing and delivering content to users of a network so that the user has “virtual” ownership of and access to the content, thereby obviating the need for physical media (e.g., DVDs or CDs). In an exemplary embodiment, the network comprises a hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network, and on-demand (OD) sessions or broadcast modes are used to deliver the virtual content stored at the head-end (or hub site) to the requesting owner. The purchased content is associated with one or more users when stored, thereby providing the owner(s) unlimited access thereto, without the costs and effort associated with renting/purchasing and maintaining DVDs. The content may also comprise new release content, which would otherwise not be available over the network at that time but for the purchase and delivery mechanisms of the invention. Various other complementary features for enhancing the user's virtual ownership experience are also disclosed.

Methods and apparatus for providing virtual content over a network

The invention is a method and a system for the providing of service to user equipment (UE). A method of providing services to user equipment in accordance with the invention includes providing from a database (420) to a policy decision entity (405) subscriber information regarding permitted conditions for the users to obtain the services; providing service information from at least one network or server (100), regarding service offered by the at least one network or server to the user equipment, forming policy rules at the policy decision entity based upon the subscriber information and the service information. A requesting user equipment transmits a request for service to the communications network which is processed by the policy decision entity in accordance with the policy rules to determine if the service is to be allowed and if the service is allowed characteristics of the service to be provided to the requesting user equipment and the policy enforcement entity enforces at least one characteristic of an allowed service upon the communication network to insure that the allowed service obtained by the requesting user equipment has the at least one characteristic of the allowed service.
