The opportunity of education is limited in Bangladesh. Dropouts in education from primary to university level are very high. Government has taken an initiative with the assistance of national and International organizations to improve the education system. Universities are autonomous bodies administrated by statutory bodies. Bangladesh Open University (BOU) is the only public university in the country that imparts education in distance mode. Regular and dropout students and working people of any ages are eligible to study in the university. University provides education with affordable cost including the course materials. At present, BOU is providing higher education and professional training in wide areas as well as basic education at secondary and higher secondary levels. It introduces several formal academic programs from certificate to master’s levels under six academic schools which have some expert faculty members. The university delivers all levels of education in different fields through tutorial services, printing materials, radio-television and using other suitable Information Communication Technology (ICT). This article aims to examine the way in which knowledge management helps to solve educational problems in the current global economy. The method employed was structured from an epistemological-documental analysis of successful educative models and the identification of relevant areas of change in high education institutions (HEI). As a result, it can be said that better codifications, curricula, and educational structures can be obtained thanks to knowledge management. In brief, through adequate knowledge management, faculties and departments at HEI have ample opportunities for development in interdisciplinary research projects. Besides, knowledge management helps to reduce costs, have new services for the students, and achieve teaching styles, as well as implement consultancies and personalized learning.

La gestión del conocimiento: Una alternativa para la solución de problemas educacionales

The emergence of ubiquitous learning requires new methods of generating and management of learning materials. In order to meet the needs of learning resources enquiry, resources reorganization and collaborative knowledge building, it calls for a new style of learning content management system in ubiquitous environment, which is the ubiquitous learning content management system (ULCMS). In the new type of learning environment, the description of ubiquitous learning resources and the construction of the semantic relationship between learning objects are the foundation of resources enquiry, resources reorganization and collaborative knowledge building. This research will construct a new ubiquitous learning content management system, focus on the learning resource ontology description and the semantic relationship construction between learning objects, and propose a semantic-oriented ubiquitous learning object model (SULOM).

Enhancing Distant Learning through Email Communication: A Case of BOU.

In this paper, we focus on a case concentrates on the use of email materials as supplements in the traditional classroom and in open and distance training and education. We describe how the interactive classification system based on thesaurus can simplify this task. This system provides the functions to index, classify and retrieve a collection of email messages based on user profiles. By automatically indexing the email messages using our system, Trainers and/or students can easily find their messages and find the topic. The system was evaluated. The test results showed that a good classification quality has been achieved with Precision percentage equal 77.4 and 90% for recall.

Advanced document management in e-Learning

Today, computer has replaced all means of communication significantly. E-mail is the most popular means of communication through computers. It has vanished the boundaries between the cities, countries and continents. Earlier Studies that used this medium, had shown evidence of higher quality of responses and also significant cost savings feature of this method (mainly for convenience of dispatch) for research purposes. In this communication, an attempt has been made to utilize email responses of prospective learners in education discipline based programs offered through open learning system. The inception of this study is linked to the creation of website (http://www.ignou.ac.in/) and availability of information related to all activated and prospective programs of studies, various school of studies, faculty email addresses and faculty vis-a-vis program coordinator in the University. The present study analyzed 65 email responses received from July 2002 to till date by the researcher on her email ID. These respondents got the email ID from the University website and due to their eagerness to attain qualifications in the field of education/guidance/educational management, sent an e-mail to the program coordinator(s). These email responses were analyzed in order to visualize the learner profiles and viability of the ongoing as well as prospective programs of studies. This paper tries to analyze the e-mail responses of the people who either by surfing IGNOU’s website or from other sources came to know about the various programs of studies offered by the School of Education. The study validates that there is an amount of hidden information even in the curiosity of the learners.

It is the digital economy age in which we are living presently. Thus, traditional thinking is proving futile and newer methods are substituting the older ones. If one has to achieve developmental goals, one has to build a knowledge repository. Success of any system today is defined by its knowledge capital. For example for a university, knowledge is a key sustainable edge and Faculty/students are their key assets. Knowledge management (KM) can provide a university with an opportunity to integrate processes, facilitate collaboration, and form relationship across traditional organizational boundaries. It no longer stands that the most knowledgeable only will conquer; it has become that one who actually uses that knowledge will get the edge. KM provides the opportunities to rethink, recast and re-engineer.
