A review on using thermoelectric cooling, heating, and electricity generators in solar energy applications

Increasing energy demand and environmental regulations around the world provide an adequate framework for developing methods of obtaining energy from renewable sources. Wind force is a resource with a high potential through which green energy can be obtained with no negative impact on the environment. Different turbine typologies have been developed, which can convert the wind force into mechanical and electrical energy through turbine rotational motion. Starting from the classic vertical-axis SAVONIUS rotor model, other models have been designed, which, according to the numerical studies and experimental test results, show higher performance parameters in operation. Such models present specific rotor blade geometries to achieve better operational results in terms of shaft torque and generated power. There are multiple research results from numerical analysis on virtual models or experimental tests that use rotor models in different constructive configurations aiming to improve operation performance. These research activities are related to the rotor blade number, the aspect and overlap ratio values, the blade profile geometry modification, the use of end plates connected to the rotor blades, curtain mounting solutions for directing the air flow on the active blade alone, and rotor constructive variants with deformable blades during operation. Some of the results obtained from the mentioned research activities are shown in this review for special rotor configurations whose performance results in terms of torque or power values are compared to the classical SAVONIUS model.

As the energy demand is growing and fossil fuel based energy resources are getting depleted, there has been an increased focus on the use of renewable energy resources. Wind energy is a highly suitable energy resource that can be harvested for the purpose. This research deals with the design and fabrication of novel designs as a mean to harness wind energy using a ‘Savonius’ Turbine. It is generally employed to harvest the low to very low wind speed potentials. The paper introduces a novel concept about a Ducted Savonius wind turbine where power generation can increase more than 10 folds. The paper provides experimental validation of the effect of using a converging ducted structure with a single stage and double stage configurations of a Savonius wind turbine. The paper also compares the turbine’s performance with and without endplates and compares Single Stage and Double Stage Turbine. The experiment results show that around 15% increase in tangential blade velocity in single stage rotor when end plates are used. The results of the study proves that power coefficient increases with the addition of a converging ducted structure with the Savonius wind turbine, and also with the use of endplates.

Experimental Investigation on a Ducted Savonius Vertical Axis Wind Turbine and its Performance Comparison with and without Endplates

It is generally employed to harvest the low to very low wind speed potentials. They can particularly be of high use in the regions where the wind speeds are not high enough for installing conventional horizontal axis wind turbines. The paper introduces a novel concept of testing a Savonius wind turbine with dimple structures on its blades and investigating its effect on the turbine’s efficiency. The study also deals with the experimental validation of the effect of using a converging ducted structure with a single stage and double stage configurations of Savonius wind turbine, apart from comparing the turbine’s performance with and without endplates. The results of the study proves that power coefficient increases with the addition of dimple structures on the blades and it can be further augmented by using a ducted structure with the Savonius turbine.

Numerical and Experimental Investigations on a Dimpled Savonius Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

One of the prime commodities in modern civilization is energy. The amount of energy consumption has become the indicator for the standard of living and the degree of industrialization. People use fossil fuels to meet nearly all of their energy needs, such as powering vehicles, producing electricity for light and heat and running factories, thus greatly exhausting the fossil fuel reserves along with polluting the environment with greenhouse gases. Renewable energy sources are viable alternatives, and among the various types of renewable energy sources available, wind energy is the sector which has a lot of untapped potential. Our objective is to improve the efficiency of a Savonius-type vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) which currently has the least efficiency among existing wind turbine designs. Savonius turbines have a very compact structure and can run at low wind speeds which are desirable characteristics for commercial-scale power production. This research paper focuses on improving the efficiency of Savonius wind turbine. Since Savonius-type wind turbines are drag-based wind turbines, we need to reduce the impulsive force acting on the negative face in order to increase the drag difference between the positive and negative side of the rotor blades thereby improving the efficiency of the turbine. Our proposition for attaining higher efficiency is by incorporating the concept of dimples (inspired from golf ball) on the negative side of the rotor blade and tubercles (inspired from whales) on the leading edge of the rotor blade. Dimples reduce the amount of wake region in the case of golf ball by increasing turbulence which is one of the desirable characteristics in the case of Savonius wind turbine. Tubercles help in reducing the wake region behind the rotor blades by increasing the turbulence of air near the surface of the rotor thereby improving the efficiency of the turbine.
