A status review on the medicinal properties of essential oils

The increased resistance of pathogenic microorganisms is frequently attributed to the extreme and inadequate use of antibiotics and transmission of resistance within and between individuals. To counter the emergence of resistant microorganisms, considerable resources have been invested in the search for new antimicrobials. Plants synthesize a diverse array of secondary metabolites (phytochemicals) known to be involved in defense mechanisms, and in the last few years it is recognized that some of these molecules have health beneficial effects, including antimicrobial properties. In this study, the mechanism of action of gallic (GA) and ferulic (FA) acids, a hydroxybenzoic acid and a hydroxycinnamic acid, was assessed on Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes. Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is an ancient fruit that is widely consumed as fresh fruit and juice. The use of pomegranate fruit dates from ancient times and reports of its therapeutic qualities have echoed throughout the ages. Both in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated how this fruit acts as antioxidant, antidiabetic, and hypolipidemic and shows antibacterial, antiinflammatory, antiviral, and anticarcinogenic activities. The fruit also improves cardiovascular and oral health. These beneficial physiological effects may also have preventive applications in a variety of pathologies. The health benefits of pomegranate have been attributed to its wide range of phytochemicals, which are predominantly polyphenols, including primarily hydrolyzable ellagitannins, anthocyanins, and other polyphenols. The aim of this review was to present an overview of the functional, medical, and physiological properties of this fruit.

Composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oils from aromatic plants used in Brazil

Antimicrobial and phytochemical studies on 45 Indian medicinal plants against multi-drug resistant human pathogens

Alcoholic extract of Plumbago zeylanica (root) was tested against multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of bacteria (Salmonella paratyphi, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae and a R-plasmid-harbouring standard strain, E.coli x+). The extract exhibited strong antibacterial activity against all test bacteria irrespective of their antibiotic resistance behaviour. Phytochemical analysis of crude extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, saponins and naphthoquinone. A comparative evaluation of R-plasmid elimination from E. coli x+ (pUK 651) by the plant extract, DNA intercalating dyes (acridine orange and ethidium bromide) and a DNA gyrase antagonizing drug (pefloxacin) were made. All these agents could cure R-plasmid effectively at their respective sub-MIC concentrations. Maximum plasmid curing was observed by pefloxacin (88%), followed by ethidium bromide (36%), acridine orange (14%) and alcoholic extract of P. zeylanica (14%). Curing of plasmid pUK651 from E. coli x+ was confirmed by determining the loss of resistance markers in the cured derivative culture.

Effect of Plumbago zeylanica extract and certain curing agents on multidrug resistant bacteria of clinical origin

The in vitro antifungal activity of clove oil was studied against four test fungi namely Alternaria alternata, Fusarium chlamydosporum, Helminthosporum oryzae and Rhizoctonia bataticola by the agar well diffusion method. These test fungi were found to be highly sensitive to clove oil at a concentration of 100 μl/well. The inhibition zone diameter was found to be in the range of 55–65 mm. The toxicity of clove oil on the germination and growth of A. alternata was further examined in liquid medium. Concentration- and time-dependent toxicity was recorded from 0.05 to 20% (v/v) concentration. The minimum fungistatic concentration was found to be 0.05%. Above this concentration, lysis of conidia and inhibition of mycelial growth were detected. Microscopic analysis showed 20–40% lysis of conidia after 72 h of incubation at 5% concentration. However at higher clove oil concentration (10%), up to 20% of conidia were lysed within 24 h of incubation. Similar concentration- and time-dependent toxicity was observed at different concentrations and time intervals. The findings indicated that clove oil possesses fungicidal activity against phytopathogenic fungi. Further study is required to determine whether it could have value in the management of plant infectious diseases.
