A hydrokinetic torque converter for use with a transmission in the power train of a motor vehicle has a housing rotatable by the engine and containing a pump, a turbine and at least one stator as well as a rotary output device connected to the input shaft of the transmission. The pump is normally rotatable by the housing; the turbine is rotatable (a) by the fluid which is circulated by the pump or (b) by the housing in response to engagement of a lockup clutch; and the stator can be connected to the stationary case of the transmission or is rotatable by the circulating fluid. First and second hubs are non-rotatably but axially movably mounted on the output member and are respectively connectable with the turbine and the stator by suitable clutches. The hubs can move axially relative to the output device between several positions in one of which the turbine can drive the input element of the transmission in a forward direction, in another of which the stator can rotate the input element in a direction to drive the vehicle rearwardly, and in a third of which the transmission is in neutral gear.

A continuously-variable transmission (CVT) assembly is employed for transmitting a torque from an external power-source The CVT includes a variable-diameter input pulley and a variable-diameter output pulley, each having a respective range of adjustment The CVT also includes a continuous torque-transmitting element extending between the variable-diameter input pulley and the variable-diameter output pulley, and thereby operatively connecting the input pulley to the output pulley The CVT additionally includes a first elastic element having a first zero stiffness over the range of adjustment of the variable-diameter input pulley and configured to apply a first constant spring clamping force via the input pulley to the continuous torque-transmitting element Furthermore, the CVT includes a second elastic element having a second zero stiffness over the range of adjustment of the variable-diameter input pulley and configured to apply a second constant spring clamping force via the output pulley to the continuous torque-transmitting element

Continuously-variable transmission

The transmission (2) has two adjustable sheaves (3,4) receiving an endless belt (5). The sheaves are each controlled by a hydraulic adjusting cylinder (6,7). The adjusting cylinders receive pressurised fluid from a pump (14). The fluid pressure and thus the extent of frictional clamping engagement between the sheaves and the belt is regulated by a torque sensor (16).The sensor includes a plenum chamber (27) with an outlet (35) having a variable cross-sectional area which depends on torque variations from the vehicle engine.

Expanding pulley C.T.V. for motor vehicle

A continuously variable transmission having two pairs of conical disks operatively connected by an endless torque-transmitting belt. One of each of the disk pairs is axially movable relative to the other along a supporting shaft. The movable disk includes an inner tooth system that engages with an outer tooth system formed on the supporting shaft. The internal tooth system can be produced by a broaching process. The inner tooth system extends outwardly of the conical disk.

Belt-driven conical-pulley transmission

The accumulator (150) is formed from a compression or coil spring that is mounted between an axially fixed element (121) and an axially displaceable cone pulley (102), each of which have a socket for receiving one end of the spring. The spring has a cross-section which tapers inwards as it moves in from one end and then out again as it progresses towards the other end.

The hydromechanical torque sensor (14) has cam discs (18,19) with conforming cam faces between which are located spreading elements (20) to tend to move the cam faces apart under high torque to act in use on one half of the expanding pulley via first and second plenum chambers (22,23) connected to a source of hydraulic fluid under pressure. Supply to the chambers is via a throttle.The plenum chambers of the torque sensor can be connected to or sealed from each other as a consequence of change in the effective dia. of the pulley to change the ratio of a transmission including the pulley. The connection between the chambers may be allowed by one-way action of a lip seal (67) or by a valve.
