Mortality, cause of death and risk factors in patients with alcohol use disorder alone or poly-substance use disorders: a 19-year prospective cohort study.
Arne Jan Hjemsæter,Jørgen G. Bramness,Jørgen G. Bramness,Robert E. Drake,Ivar Skeie,Ivar Skeie,Bent Berntsen Monsbakken,Bent Berntsen Monsbakken,Jurate Saltyte Benth,Jurate Saltyte Benth,Anne Landheim +10 more

Journal ArticleDOI
Mortality, Causes of Death, and Predictors of Death among Patients On and Off Opioid Agonist Treatment: Results from a 19-Year Cohort Study
Ivar Skeie,Thomas Clausen,Arne Jan Hjemsæter,Anne Landheim,Bent Monsbakken,Magne Thoresen,Helge Waal +6 more
TL;DR: The long observation period made the importance of long-term retention in OAT to reduce mortality demonstrated, and the preponderance of somatic and reduction of drug-induced causes of death during OAT underlines the need for follow-up of chronic diseases and health-promoting lifestyle changes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predictors of problematic substance use 18 years after treatment: a longitudinal cohort study of persons with substance use disorders
Arne Jan Hjemsæter,Arne Jan Hjemsæter,Jørgen G. Bramness,Jørgen G. Bramness,Robert E. Drake,Ivar Skeie,Ivar Skeie,Bent Berntsen Monsbakken,Bent Berntsen Monsbakken,Magne Thoresen,Anne Landheim +10 more
TL;DR: In a group of patients with long lasting substance use disorders and high psychiatric comorbidity that entered treatment, close to half of those participating at a follow-up study had current problematic substance use during the past 12 months 18 years later.
Journal ArticleDOI
Levels of mental distress over 18 years after entering treatment for substance use disorders: A longitudinal cohort study
Arne Jan Hjemsæter,Jørgen G. Bramness,Robert E. Drake,Ivar Skeie,Bent Berntsen Monsbakken,Jurate Saltyte Benth,Anne Landheim +6 more
TL;DR: There seems to be an additive effect between ongoing problematic substance use and lifetime mental disorders on greater levels of mental distress, and the importance of integrated treatment for both substance use disorders and mental disorders to improve the long-term course for patients with these comorbid disorders is addressed.
