International labor migration has increased the day-to-day encounters of persons from different cultural groups. The concept of ethnicity, its historical development, its ambiguity, and its role in the interactions between persons of different cultural groups are explored. The arena of health care for migrants brings to the fore issues of providing culturally competent care. In an ideal world, all nursing care of migrants would be delivered by skilled transcultural nurses; but in the real world, this is not yet the case. A case study of a Mexican migrant woman and a non-Hispanic Midwestern nurse is used as a background for examining the role of ethnicity in determining care needs and expectations and for providing nurses with a perspective that can improve nurse-client collaboration.

Labor Practices in the Meat Packing and Poultry Processing Industry: An Overview

Carter (2014), Phillips (1998), and Zentella (1997) have extensively discussed the ways that linguistic discrimination functions to suppress the maintenance of minority languages like Spanish in the U.S. This study analyzes perceptions of linguistic discrimination reported by Spanish-speaking residents of Garden City, Kansas in order to understand more about how discrimination may contribute to displacement. By focusing on the ideologies and experiences of Spanish-speaking residents, I explore Spanish as a minority language in Garden City in ways that previous literature (Broadway, 1990; Grey, 1990; Stull, 1990; etc.) has not: with language as the focus and from the perspective of the participants themselves. Data was collected from 31 first- and second-generation Latino residents using sociolinguistic interviews and two questionnaires. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using a grounded theory approach (Charmaz, 2008; Glaser & Strauss, 1967), whereby sociolinguistic methodologies were combined with ethnography to paint a larger picture of the data presented. The findings show that experiences of discrimination can influence language practices and family language policy, and may contribute to the displacement of Spanish in the community. This thesis contributes to sociolinguistic discussions about language practices and policy, linguistic discrimination and Spanish in the U.S. Specifically, it helps expand debates about interpretation services within healthcare, ESL and dual-language education, community policing in regions with high non-English-speaking populations, the politics of Spanish as a minority language in the U.S., and the connections between all of these concepts and the maintenance or displacement of Spanish. This work adds to the database of linguistic research into "new" Latino sociolinguistic regions of the United States, and contributes to highlighting the differences and similarities between these and more established Latino sociolinguistic regions.

"Speak American": linguistic discrimination against Latino residents of Garden City, KS

The rise of ethnic awareness in the United States overturned the melting pot and altered beliefs in American assimilation. Garden City, Kansas is host to communities of resident Mexican Americans and newcomer Latinos. Both groups arrived during different historical periods in search of jobs under different economic and political conditions. Mexican Americans and Latinos are very different populations with diverse ethnic characteristics. This paper reviews the circumstances behind the immigration of both populations to this Great Plains state and reviews the extent of ethnic relations among and between "native** Mexican Americans and newcomer Latinos. What role has ethnicity played for each group, and what is their relation to the greater population of Garden City? The Mexican American community by nearly a century's residence has changed in the course of time and today faces internal conflict. The immigrant Latinos are a very mobile and young population who live on the periphery of community life. Changing market conditions and the high employment turnover rate keeps the immigrant Latinos highly mobile and powerless. Despite experiences elsewhere in the United States where different Hispanic populations formed a collective identity based on a common language, no such camaraderie exists in Garden City.
