The tundish flux composition of the invention employs solid recycled ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF) slag as a fluidizing and refining base ingredient in a mixture of raw materials. The preferred recycled LMF slag material comprises about 35% to about 65% CaO, about 10% to about 35% Al 2 O 3 , about 1% to about 10% SiO 2 , about 3% to about 15% MgO, about 0.3% to about 10% FeO, about 0.1% to about 5% MnO, about 0.1% to about 0.15% P 2 O 5 , and about 0.1% to about 0.5% S. The tundish flux composition comprises from about 10% to about 80% of recycled LMF slag with the balance being raw materials selected from a calcium oxide source, a fluorine source, a magnesium oxide source, a carbon source, a silica source, a sodium source, a potassium source, and mixtures of these raw materials.

Basic tundish flux composition for steelmaking processes

Aluminum dross containing chlorides and combustible volatile material is agglomerated and sized to produce a compact which is then treated in a direct fired rotary kiln in excess of 1800° F. to volatilize the chlorides and burn the combustible volatile material and to produce a refractory material. The flue gases containing the volatilized chlorides are then treated in a condenser where the chlorides are condensed out of the remaining flue gases. The refractory product from the kiln may be passed through a cooler wherein the heat is transferred to the combustion air.

Aluminum dross reclamation

In ladle refining of steel a molten protective slag covering is used consisting of iron blast furnace slag, or of a mixture of solid burnt lime and/or burnt dolomitic lime together with iron blast furnace slag in an amount effective to serve as a flux promoting the melting of the lime and dolomitic lime. The iron blast furnace slag avoids the environmentally harmful emissions caused by use of fluorspar as a flux. It forms a quicker melting slag, resulting in lower power usage and shorter refining times. It forms a final slag with good physical properties. There is considerable reduction of wear of the ladle and roof refractories and carbon pick up from the ladle refining electrodes is minimized.

Additive for promoting slag formation in steel refining ladle

Synthetic flux for steel slag consisting of a mixture of aluminous or alumina residues with one or more of the compounds of the group: clay, marl, sodium carbonate, borax, nepheline, bentonite. An important advantage of the above mixture is its eliminating the presence offluorite orfluorispar.

Synthetic flux for steel slag

Production of an activated type alumina from aluminum dross by digestion with water, preferably pressurized. The peculiar properties associated with trace compounds present in the product make it useful for the recovery of noxious effluents from furnacing processes, including those burning fossil fuels and those used for smelting both aluminum and steel, wherein the alumina beneficially incorporates in the metallurgical flux.
