TL;DR: In-situ tests such as the piezocone penetration test (CPTU), the flat dilatometer (DMT) and the self-boring pressure meter test (SBPT) provide an alternative to the traditional field vane tests (FVT) for in-sit evaluation of undrained shear strength (Su) profiles in foundation clay at sites underlain by recent deposits as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: In-situ tests such as the piezocone penetration test (CPTU), the flat dilatometer (DMT) and the self boring pressuremeter test (SBPT) provide an alternative to the traditional field vane tests (FVT) for in-situ evaluation of undrained shear strength (Su) profiles in foundation clay at sites underlain by recent deposits. Data collected at a huge land reclamation site at Changi in the eastern part of Singapore allow a verification of the applicability of existing correlations and methods of interpretation of these in-situ tests for Singapore Marine Clay. With proper modification, the selected methods of interpretation have been found useful for the evaluation of undrained shear strength at the Changi site. The Su profiles as interpreted from various in-situ tests were found comparable to that from the traditional field vane test and that from the CKoU triaxial test. The close comparison provides support for the proper use of in-situ tests for undrained strength determination of Singapore Marine Clay. (A)
