Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, receiving, by a feed point of a dielectric antenna, electromagnetic waves from a dielectric core coupled to the feed point without an electrical return path, where at least a portion of the dielectric antenna comprises a conductive surface, directing, by the feed point, the electromagnetic waves to a proximal portion of the dielectric antenna, and radiating, via an aperture of the dielectric antenna, a wireless signal responsive to the electromagnetic waves being received at the aperture. In general, in one aspect, reverse link capacity is shared among remote units. The capacity sharing can be determined dynamically. The forward link capacity can also be enhanced by estimating the location of the mobile stations.

The wiring may be a building utility wiring, such as telephone, AC power or CATV wiring. The baseband signal is carried simultaneously with the utility service signal over the utility wiring using Frequency Division Multiplexing. The device may be enclosed with a data unit, a standalone dedicated enclosure, within an outlet or as a plug-in outlet adapter. Data units may couple the device by a wiring port such as standard data connector, or via wireless connection. The device may be locally powered or via a power signal carried over the wiring. System and method for carrying a wireless based signal over wiring

A distributed antenna and backhaul system provide network connectivity for a small cell deployment. Rather than building new structures, and installing additional fiber and cable, embodiments described herein disclose using high-bandwidth, millimeter-wave communications and existing power line infrastructure. Above ground backhaul connections via power lines and line-of-sight millimeter-wave band signals as well as underground backhaul connections via buried electrical conduits can provide connectivity to the distributed base stations. An overhead millimeter-wave system can also be used to provide backhaul connectivity. Modules can be placed onto existing infrastructure, such as streetlights and utility poles, and the modules can contain base stations and antennas to transmit the millimeter-waves to and from other modules.

A distributed antenna system is provided that frequency shifts the output of one or more microcells to a 60 GHz or higher frequency range for transmission to a set of distributed antennas. The cellular band outputs of these microcell base station devices are used to modulate a 60 GHz (or higher) carrier wave, yielding a group of subcarriers on the 60 GHz carrier wave. This group will then be transmitted in the air via analog microwave RF unit, after which it can be repeated or radiated to the surrounding area. The repeaters amplify the signal and resend it on the air again toward the next repeater. In places where a microcell is required, the 60 GHz signal is shifted in frequency back to its original frequency (e.g., the 1.9 GHz cellular band) and radiated locally to nearby mobile devices.

Remote distributed antenna system

A communication system and method are provided for equalizing delay of transmission paths in a distributed antenna network. The distributed antenna network includes a plurality of remote antenna units, a central unit or a base station connected to the remote antenna units by transmission media, where each connection between the base station and one of the remote antenna units forms a separate transmission path having an associated delay time, a delay detector for determining the associated delay time of the separate transmission paths for each of the remote antenna units, and a delay compensator for adjusting the associated delay times in response to the delay detectors so that all of the associated delay times are substantially equalized. The system and method allow the delay parameters for the entire network to be set upon installation and then to be periodically updated without physical intervention by an operator. The detection and compensation allow for equalization of delay time differences that could not otherwise be compensated in the base stations of mobile stations of conventional systems and methods. Furthermore, the equalization synchronizes the bursts so that air frame timing between cells served by the remote antenna units is enhanced and the hand-off performance therebetween is improved.

System and method for equalizing the delay time for transmission paths in a distributed antenna network

A communications system and method are provided for reducing noise in a distributed antenna network. The system includes a plurality of remote antenna units (100n) with each remote antenna unit including a receiver for receiving input signals, a signal strength processor (130n) for determining whether a valid signal is present at its respective remote antenna unit (102n) and an output controller (142n) for switching off the network connection when no valid signal is present. As a result, the cumulative noise generated by uplink stages connected to the remote antenna units (100n) is reduced by switching off the network conncection of remote antennas that do not have to be connected. The communications system and method may further include an output controller for controlling the output for its respective remote antenna unit based on the comparison by the signal strength processor. The output controller may control the network connection of the remote antennas by switching off their connection to the network when the signal strength processor determines that the signal strength level is below a noise threshold level. The output controller may control the output of the remote antenna units by switching off their connection to the network when the signal strength processor determines that the signal strength level is below a noise threshold level and by switching on the connection to the network when the input signal strength level is greater than or equal to the noise threshold level.

A system and method are provided for controlling the gain of signals transported over transmission media in a distributed antenna network The system includes a plurality of remote antenna units where each remote antenna unit includes a signal level comparator for comparing the level of the signals received by the respective antenna unit with a predetermined reference level, and a gain controller for reducing the gain of the remote antenna unit when the signal level comparator determines that the level of the received signal exceeds said predetermined reference level The system may accommodate TDMA systems when a gain controller is used that is fast enough to respond within the time slots of the received signals As a result, the signal levels output from the remote antenna units are prevented from exceeding a maximum signal level

System and method for controlling the level of signals output to transmission media in a distributed antenna network

A method of supporting voice-band modem-to-modem calls in a wireless communication system is disclosed. In some embodiments, once a modem call is detected, the modem call is terminated. Data in the terminated modem call is then demodulated and relayed from one end of a wireless broadband channel to the other end of the wireless broadband channel. Transfer of the data to the second modem is completed when the other end of the wireless broadband channel places a modem call to the second modem. By sending data in high-rate modem calls via a wireless broadband channel rather than over multiple, dedicated wireless voice channels, resources of the wireless communication system are utilized more efficiently that can result in significant gains in system capacity.

A remote RF unit in a distributed antenna system includes a substantially weatherproof housing, and multiple directional patch antennas are mounted on one or more surfaces of the housing. The antennas are preferably mounted flush with the surfaces of the housing, and can be easily made weatherproof by covering the antennas with radomes. The antenna are integrated by circuitry contained within the weatherproof housing, which includes RF combining circuits and RF dividing circuits.
