In addition to the often-cited advantages of using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system in plant biological research (1), Arabidopsis has many additional characteristics that make it an attractive experimental organism for studying lea d (Pb) accumulation and tolerance in plants. These include its fortuitous familial relationship to many known metal hyperaccumulators (Brassicaceae), as well as similar Pbaccumulation patterns to most other plants. Using nutrient-agar plates, hydroponic culture, and Pb-contaminated soils as growth media, we found significant variation in Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes in accumulation and tolerance of Pb. In addition, we have found that Pb accumulation is not obligatorily linked with Pb tolerance, suggesti ng that different genetic factors control these two processes. We also screened ethyl methanesulfonate-mutagenized M2 populations and identified several Pb-accumulating mutants. Current characterization of these mutants indicates that their phenotypes are likely due to alteration of general metal ion uptake or translocation processes since these mutants also accumulate many other metals in shoots. We expect that further characterization of the ecotypes and mutants will shed light on the basic genetic and physiological underpinnings of plant-based Pb remediation. 7. Bacteria and plants might be used to enhance remediation of soil pollutants in situ. This study assessed the potential of bacteria (12 isolates), plants (16 forage grasses), and plant-bacteria associations (selected pairings) to remediate 2-chlorobenzoic acid (2CBA)-contaminated soil. Initially, grass viability was assessed in 2CBA-contaminated soil. Soil was contaminated wi th 2CBA, forage grasses were grown under growth chamber conditions for 42 or 60 d, and the 2CBA concentration in soil was determined by gas chromatography. Only five of 16 forage grasses grew in 2CBA-treated (816 mg/kg) soil. Growth of Bromus inermis had no effect on 2CBA concentration, whereas Agropyron intermedium, B. biebersteinii, A. riparum, and Elymus dauricus decreased 2CBA relative to nonplanted control soil by 32 to 42%. A review on bioremediation approach for heavy metal detoxification and accumulation in plants.

A field experiment was conducted with paddy (Oryza sativa L.) irrigated with different concentrations (Control, 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 200 mg/l) of chromium. The changes in growth, yield, nutrient content and chromium accumulation in the paddy are reported. The growth of shoot, root, total leaf area, fresh weight, dry weight and yield of the paddy gradually decreased with increasing Cr concentration. Similarly, the uptake of macronutrients (N, P, K) and micronutrients (Mn, Cu, Zn, Fe) were also gradually decreased. However, the chromium accumulation gradually increased with the increasing concentrations of chromium. Among the aquatic plants tested, Eicchornia crassipes showed better performance in accumulating higher amount of chromium. Similarly, certain grasses and weeds such as Cyperus rotundus, Cyperus kylinga, Marselia quadrifolia and Ludwigia parvifloria were used for the phytoremediation of chromium polluted soil. Among them, Cyperus rotundus accumulated higher amount of chromium than the other plants tested.

Phytoremediation is an economically viable green technology that utilizes hyperaccumulator plants to remove heavy metals (HM) from the soil. Hyperaccumulators are adept at sequestering high concentrations of HM in aerial parts and intracellular detoxification of HM through cell wall binding, organic acids, chelation and sequestration. Excess HM activate oxidative stress defense mechanisms and initiate synthesis of stress-related proteins in plants. Plethora of studies have assessed the feasibility of phytoextraction and demonstrated that high biomass and metal hyperaccumulation are the two basic requirements for making the process efficient. However, biochemical pathways involved in HM uptake, translocation and sequestration in these plants are not fully understood. Thus, more fundamental understanding of the traits and mechanisms involved in hyperaccumulation is needed to optimize phytoextraction. In this review, we aim to focus on the mechanisms of uptake, transport, and accumulation of common HM such as mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and Arsenic (As) in hyperaccumulator plants. We will also discuss prominent metallophytes and their phytoremediation strategies. This study will be helpful in understanding the pathways involved in the uptake and translocation of HM by hyperaccumulators. It would also assist in gaining knowledge about the adaptation strategy used by plants to achieve homeostasis.
