Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the quality of information offered for patients seeking information on lingual orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: YouTube™ was searched for videos about lingual orthodontic treatment using the key word “lingual braces” from the Google Trends application. One hundred and four videos were selected to be analyzed from the first 120 results. The video content was evaluated using a 10-point score, which was used for classifying low- and high-content video groups. The video information and quality index (VIQI) was applied to determine the quality of the videos. The Mann-Whitney U-test, Chi-square test, and logistic regression analysis were used, and the Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated for statistical evaluations. Lingual orthodontic treatment: A YouTube™ video analysis.

Rationale: Patients frequently use YouTube as a platform for dissemination and consumption of health information. Caregivers and patients affected by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) are likely consumers of this information. Objectives: We aimed to determine viewer engagement, quality, and content of YouTube videos on IPF and to compare the provided information with contemporaneous guidelines. Methods: We analyzed the first 200 YouTube videos resulting from the search term "idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis." Patient-directed videos containing any information on IPF were eligible. Each video was evaluated for content related to IPF features and treatments that are discussed in clinical practice guidelines, as well as nonrecommended treatments. Video quality was assessed using an adapted Health on the Net Foundation Code of Conduct (HONCode) scoring instrument and the validated DISCERN instrument (a questionnaire that evaluates the quality of consumer health information). Details of the video source and viewer engagement metrics were recorded for each video. Results: A total of 102 videos met eligibility criteria. No videos assessed all content topics, with videos addressing a median of 17% of all potential content items that were highlighted in clinical practice guidelines. Content scores were higher in videos produced by foundations and medical organizations, news/media organizations, and independent medical professionals compared with videos produced by industry, for-profit organizations, and independent nonmedical users. Nonrecommended and/or potentially harmful therapies were described as valid and potentially beneficial treatments for IPF in 17% of videos, with higher viewership and engagement metrics for these videos. HONCode and DISCERN scores that assessed for video reliability, credibility, and quality of information, were poor for all video source types but were lower in videos posted by industry/for profit organizations and independent nonmedical users. Conclusions: Patient-directed YouTube videos on IPF frequently provide incomplete and inaccurate information. Videos supporting the use of nonrecommended therapies have higher viewing numbers and user engagement, highlighting the potential risks of using YouTube as a resource for health information. Physicians, professional organizations, and patient support organizations should be aware that YouTube is frequently used by patients. Developing a tool similar to HONCode that applies to YouTube videos would improve the ability to critically and rapidly appraise the quality of online video-disseminated information on IPF.

YouTube Videos as a Source of Misinformation on Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Is YouTube Useful as a Source of Health Information for Adults With Type 2 Diabetes? A South Asian Perspective.

Background
Patients can and do search the Internet for information on various health-related topics. YouTube™ is one popular website they may consult.

Aim
To examine the quality of information offered by YouTube™ for patients seeking information on early childhood caries (ECC).

Design
YouTube™ was searched for videos on ECC. The usefulness of selected videos in providing adequate information about ECC was evaluated using a 13-point usefulness score. The guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry were used for benchmarking.

Results
Most videos were uploaded by healthcare professionals (60%, n = 18). Videos had generally low usefulness scores (mean: 5.1 ± 2.9; range: 1–11). An average YouTube™ video on ECC was viewed two times/day (range: 0.07–34.4 views/day). Less useful videos ranked early on the viewing list, and viewer's interactions with videos were not affected significantly by their usefulness.

Conclusion
YouTube™ should not be used as a trusted site for educating patients on ECC.

YouTube as a source for parents' education on early childhood caries

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the content, reliability, and quality of videos about orthodontic clear aligners on YouTube. MATERIALS AND METHODS Researchers used the Google Trends website to determine that the most frequently used search term for orthodontic clear aligners on the Internet was: "Invisalign." A search was then conducted on YouTube using the key word "Invisalign." From the first 140 results, 100 videos were selected for analysis. A 13-point content score was used to classify poor-content and rich-content videos, and the global quality scale (GQS) was used to examine quality of the videos. To evaluate reliability of the information, a five-question scale was used. The Mann-Whitney U-test, χ2 test, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used for statistical evaluations. RESULTS Of the YouTube videos, 33 were classified as rich content and 67 as poor content. Most videos (73%) were uploaded by laypeople, and most uploaders (71%) were women. The most commonly discussed content was instructions (65%), followed by procedure (57%) and pain (52%). Regarding the GQS, most of the videos were evaluated as moderate quality (51%). Compared with the poor-content video group, the rich-content video group had a significantly higher GQS score (P = .004). There was no significant difference between the poor-content and rich-content groups regarding information reliability (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS Video content on YouTube relating to aligner orthodontics was generally insufficient. The quality of videos was moderate, but the reliability of information was generally poor. Specialists should refer patients to reliable sources of information.

YouTube as a source of information about orthodontic clear aligners.

Objectives We examined the content of YouTube(™) videos on mouth (oral) cancer and evaluated their usefulness in promoting early detection of oral cancer. Materials and methods A systematic search of YouTube(™) for videos containing information on mouth cancer was conducted using the keywords 'mouth cancer' and 'oral cancer'. Demographics of videos, including type, source, length, and viewers' interaction, were evaluated, and three researchers independently assessed the videos for usefulness in promoting early detection of oral cancer. Results A total of 188 YouTube(™) videos (152 patient-oriented educational videos and 36 testimonial videos) were analyzed. The overall usefulness score ranged from 0 to 10 (mean = 3.56 ± 2.44). The most useful videos ranked late on the viewing list, and there was no significant correlation between video usefulness and viewing rate, viewers' interaction, and video length. Videos uploaded by individual users were less useful compared with videos uploaded by professional organizations or by healthcare professionals. Conclusion Healthcare professionals, academic institutions, and professional organizations have a responsibility for improving the content of YouTube(™) about mouth cancer by uploading useful videos, and directing patients to reliable information sources.
