Allocation of empty containers between multi-ports

This study is based on a major container terminal operator in Hong Kong. Container terminals form a link in the transport chain for transhipment and temporary storage of containers. The service time for vessels including waiting time for berthing must be minimal in order to reduce costs for shipping lines. The use of heuristics and computer simulation to measure different allocation strategies is demonstrated. The existing performance measures of allocation are evaluated and prioritized. Three sets of allocation policies are developed to tackle the day-to-day allocation problems with a view to increasing operational efficiency and enhancing customer service levels. Results show that all three proposed allocation policies have substantial improvements over the existing policy.

A study of container berth allocation.

Web services are becoming the prominent paradigm for distributed computing and electronic business. This has raised the opportunity for service providers and application developers to develop value-added services by combining existing web services. However, current web service composition solutions do not address software engineering principles for raising the level of abstraction in web-services by providing facilities for packaging, re-using, specializing and customizing service compositions.In this paper we propose the concept of service component that packages together complex services and presents their interfaces and operations in a consistent and uniform manner in the form of an abstract class definition, Service components are internally synthesized out of reused, specialized, or extended complex web services and just like normal web services are published and can thus be invoked by any service-based application. In addition, we present an integrated framework and prototype system that manage the entire life-cycle of service components ranging from abstract service component definition, scheduling, and construction to execution.

Service components for managing the life-cycle of service compositions

A microcomputer-based simulation model is described which was developed to aid in the planning of future berth requirements at a third-world port. The port handles a variety of incoming and outgoing cargoes, using a mixture of specialized and general berths. Some of the complications of the ship-to-berth allocation rules are described, and how they were modelled. The help that the model provided to the consultants is briefly outlined.

A Microcomputer-Based Simulation Study of a Port

SM is a multifaceted and complex field due to the numerous applications involved, particularly since SM applications range from nuclear reaction to supermarket queuing. Simulation and Modeling: Current Technologies and Applications includes examinations of current issues related to simulation such as: Web-based simulation, virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence. This book combines different methods, views, theories, and applications of simulations into one volume, and offers insight into the computer science aspect of simulation and modeling while integrating the business practices of SM.

History of Simulation

The Web service composition has received much attention recently to support business-to-business enterprise applications integration. Many composition approaches, languages, platforms, and patents have been proposed to overcome this issue. In this paper we present some of Web service composition languages, platforms, patents, and composition strategies, we compared them to some of the features that must be held by composition process, features such as the dynamic adaptation, execution monitoring, and quality of service (QoS) constraints to satisfy client's requirements to execute Web process. And we give an outlook to essential future research work. Recent patent and research advances aim to find methods for dynamic learning and redesigning along with monitoring and optimization of Web service composition process to satisfy user constraints.
