Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Nano-sized TiO 2 photocatalytic water-splitting technology has great potential for low-cost, environmentally friendly solar-hydrogen production to support the future hydrogen economy. Presently, the solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency is too low for the technology to be economically sound. The main barriers are the rapid recombination of photo-generated electron/hole pairs as well as backward reaction and the poor activation of TiO 2 by visible light. In response to these deficiencies, many investigators have been conducting research with an emphasis on effective remediation methods. Some investigators studied the effects of addition of sacrificial reagents and carbonate salts to prohibit rapid recombination of electron/hole pairs and backward reactions. Other research focused on the enhancement of photocatalysis by modification of TiO 2 by means of metal loading, metal ion doping, dye sensitization, composite semiconductor, anion doping and metal ion-implantation. This paper aims to review the up-to-date development of the above-mentioned technologies applied to TiO 2 photocatalytic hydrogen production. Based on the studies reported in the literature, metal ion-implantation and dye sensitization are very effective methods to extend the activating spectrum to the visible range. Therefore, they play an important role in the development of efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Decontamination and disinfection of water by solar photocatalysis: Recent overview and trends

Plastic solar cells bear the potential for large-scale power generation based on materials that provide the possibility of flexible, lightweight, inexpensive, efficient solar cells. Since the discovery of the photoinduced electron transfer from a conjugated polymer to fullerene molecules, followed by the introduction of the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) concept, this material combination has been extensively studied in organic solar cells, leading to several breakthroughs in efficiency, with a power conversion efficiency approaching 5 %. This article reviews the processes and limitations that govern device operation of polymer.-fullerene BHJ solar cells, with respect to the charge-carrier transport and photogeneration mechanism. The transport of electrons/holes in the blend is a crucial parameter and must be controlled (e.g., by controlling the nanoscale morphology) and enhanced in order to allow fabrication of thicker films to maximize the absorption, without significant recombination losses. Concomitantly, a balanced transport of electrons and holes in the blend is needed to suppress the build-up of the space-charge that will significantly reduce the power conversion efficiency. Dissociation of electron-hole pairs at the donor/acceptor interface is an important process that limits the charge generation efficiency under normal operation condition. Based on these findings, there is a compromise between charge generation (light absorption) and open-circuit voltage (V-oc) when attempting to reduce the bandgap of the polymer (or fullerene). Therefore, an increase in V-oc of polymer.-fullerene cells, for example by raising the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level of the fullerene, will benefit cell performance as both fill factor and short-circuit current increase simultaneously.

Device Physics of Polymer:Fullerene Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells

The remarkable achievement by Fujishima and Honda (1972) in the photo-electrochemical water splitting results in the extensive use of TiO 2 nanomaterials for environmental purification and energy storage/conversion applications. Though there are many advantages for the TiO 2 compared to other semiconductor photocatalysts, its band gap of 3.2 eV restrains application to the UV-region of the electromagnetic spectrum ( λ  ≤ 387.5 nm). As a result, development of visible-light active titanium dioxide is one of the key challenges in the field of semiconductor photocatalysis. In this review, advances in the strategies for the visible light activation, origin of visible-light activity, and electronic structure of various visible-light active TiO 2 photocatalysts are discussed in detail. It has also been shown that if appropriate models are used, the theoretical insights can successfully be employed to develop novel catalysts to enhance the photocatalytic performance in the visible region. Recent developments in theory and experiments in visible-light induced water splitting, degradation of environmental pollutants, water and air purification and antibacterial applications are also reviewed. Various strategies to identify appropriate dopants for improved visible-light absorption and electron–hole separation to enhance the photocatalytic activity are discussed in detail, and a number of recommendations are also presented.

Visible-light activation of TiO2 photocatalysts: Advances in theory and experiments

From early developments to recently developed stages of solar cells have been discussed in details, considering the effect of different parameters. In this paper, primitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell and PEC cell with Fe–thionine and different dyes-reducing agent have been reviewed. Solar cell with phenazine dyes have also been pointed out separately since these dyes give more output in solar cell. The use of inorganic semiconductor electrode (e.g. SnO2, In2O3 and ZnO) and utilization of semiconducting properties of organic dyes in PEC cell have been mentioned. Furthermore, utilization of surfactant media for storage of solar energy and production of hydrogen from solar cell using dye are also included.

Solar cells based on dyes

A new type solar cell consisting of dye-redox system have been developed. Instead of single dye, mixture of two dyes along with a reducing agent, EDTA was taken in the illuminated compartment of an H-shaped cell in which I−/I2 redox couple in the dark compartment are separated by glass membrane (Porosity G-4). The dyes used for mixed system are of four classes: phenazine, thiazine, xanthene and acridine. Calculated solar energy efficiency (SEE) and other cell characteristics of mixed dye-solar cell is larger in comparison to the cell with single dye.
