Journal ArticleDOI

Seismic retrofit of frame structures using passive systems based on optimal control

TL;DR: In this paper, a robust analysis redesign (RAR) iterative approach is proposed to solve a constrained optimization problem to minimize a cost function representing total energy while satisfying the equations of motion and allowable interstory drifts for given severe ground motions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Analytical approach for the design and optimal allocation of shape memory alloy dampers in three-dimensional nonlinear structures

TL;DR: A simplified nonlinear equations-model is presented that is intended to design shape memory alloy (SMA) dampers in three-dimensional structures of unsymmetrical-plan and in yielding shear-frames and takes no more than two iterations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Seismic structural design methodology for inelastic shear buildings that regulates floor accelerations

TL;DR: The design methodology developed achieves optimal changes that depend on the assigned side-constraints only in four distinct steps, which in itself is a novel approach to the utilization of H∞ based algorithms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Seismic retrofit of two-way unsymmetric-plan buildings with added masses

TL;DR: The results show that the maximum interstory drifts within the structure, the maximum story shear-forces applied to the lateral-load carrying frames, and the maximum absolute acceleration are reduced by moving the CM closer to the CR, which mitigates the threat of structural failure and demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed retrofit approach.
