Tsitsilonis,Konstantinos E. Stamoulis,Issidora S. Papassideri,A Nastasios G Kriebardis,Angelo D'Alessandro,Marianna H. Antonelou +15 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the βThal+ units exhibited better levels of storage haemolysis and susceptibility to lysis following osmotic, oxidative and mechanical insults, while the β-thal+ RBCs had a lower percentage of surface removal signaling, reactive oxygen species and oxidative defects to membrane components at late stages of storage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Red cell proteasome modulation by storage, redox metabolism and transfusion.
Vassilis L. Tzounakas,Monika Dzieciatkowska,Alkmini T. Anastasiadi,Dimitrios G. Karadimas,Athina Vergaki,Panagiotis Siourounis,Konstantinos E. Stamoulis,Issidora S. Papassideri,Anastasios G. Kriebardis,Angelo D'Alessandro,Marianna H. Antonelou +10 more
TL;DR: Investigation of the effects of storage and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency on the activity and topology of red blood cell (RBC) proteasomes in fresh blood and RBCs from control and G6PD- donors following storage in leukoreduced units found that storage-induced modifications in the proteasome activities were only partly restored in transfusion-mimicking conditions.
