By using the concept of induced torque coefficients, a method is developed for the simultaneous coordination of power system stabilizers (PSSs) and FACTS device stabilizers (FDSs) in order to enhance the damping of the rotor modes of oscillation in a multimachine system. The proposed coordination scheme employs linear programming. However, because eigenanalysis using the QR algorithm is required, it is limited to systems with less than 600-700 states. A case study is given which illustrates the coordination of PSSs and FDSs in a three-area system with 29 stations, 3 SVCs and 400 states.

Power generation planning: a survey from monopoly to competition

This paper proposes a design approach for power system stabilizing controllers based on parameter optimization of compensators with generalized structures. It shows that a selective modal performance index is an improved measure of the stabilizing effect of a given design, although its blind minimization can end in a useless local minimum. Adding stability, sensitivity and robustness constraints greatly improve the engineering significance of the resulting design. The development is fully multivariable and remains sufficiently general to apply equally well to a feedback or cascade stabilizer, with any type of input signal or transfer function structure. Three examples are used: a robust PSS design for a single machine-infinite bus system with multiple operating points; multiple PSS coordination for a large system; and a coordinated design of four PSSs for the Kundur's two-area test system. All results show good prospects for the constrained optimization based approach to the design of robust stabilizers.

To solve these inequalities, genetic algorithms have been applied to determine the PSS parameters.

Coordinated synthesis of PSS parameters in multi-machine power systems using the method of inequalities applied to genetic algorithms

This paper presents a new method for simultaneously selecting the power system stabilizer (PSS) parameters in multimachine power systems. Design of local output feedback power system stabilizer using local signal of the generator (e.g. speed or power) is formulated as a decentralized modal control (DMC) problem. Exact model reduction based on modal control theory is proposed to make the determination of PSS parameters highly efficient. Results obtained from the coordinated tuning of the parameters of three power system stabilizers equipped on a multimachine power system show that exact assignment of the eigenvalues associated with the poorly damped electromechanical modes can be achieved in a very efficient manner.

A new coordinated synthesis method of applying power system stabilizers (PSS) was developed by combining eigenvalue sensitivity analysis and linear programming. This method is simultaneously able to select the generators to which the PSS can be effectively Applied and to synthesize the adequate transfer functions of the PSS for these generators. The proposed itethod is used to synthesize the coordinated PSS for a 12-machine system.

A New Load-flow Algorithm Effective Under Heavy Load Conditions

Voltage/reactive power planning is a tremendous process which requires a planner to have intellectual expertise. This paper presents a large knowledge-based system that can make voltage/reactive power planning. The knowledge acquisition has been completed on the basis of interview and protocol analysis methods. The result shows that the voltage/reactive power planning is composed of three phases: the first is reactive power adjustment where overall reactive power balance is investigated; the second is voltage adjustment where all bus voltages are tuned within the permissible operational range; and the third is voltage adjustment with a single fault of all major lines. The knowledge base is coded by about 700 production rules. It can succeed in making a voltage/reactive power plan for a very large power system.
