Brain tumor (BT) is one of the brain abnormalities which arises due to various reasons. The unrecognized and untreated BT will increase the morbidity and mortality rates. The clinical level assessment of BT is normally performed using the bio-imaging technique, and MRI-assisted brain screening is one of the universal techniques. The proposed work aims to develop a deep learning architecture (DLA) to support the automated detection of BT using two-dimensional MRI slices. This work proposes the following DLAs to detect the BT: (i) implementing the pre-trained DLAs, such as AlexNet, VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50 and ResNet101 with the deep-features-based SoftMax classifier; (ii) pre-trained DLAs with deep-features-based classification using decision tree (DT), k nearest neighbor (KNN), SVM-linear and SVM-RBF; and (iii) a customized VGG19 network with serially-fused deep-features and handcrafted-features to improve the BT detection accuracy. The experimental investigation was separately executed using Flair, T2 and T1C modality MRI slices, and a ten-fold cross validation was implemented to substantiate the performance of proposed DLA. The results of this work confirm that the VGG19 with SVM-RBF helped to attain better classification accuracy with Flair (>99%), T2 (>98%), T1C (>97%) and clinical images (>98%).

A customized VGG19 network with concatenation of deep and handcrafted features for brain tumor detection

Early-stage detection of lesions is the best possible way to fight breast cancer, a disease with the highest malignancy ratio among women. Though several methods primarily based on deep learning have been proposed for tumor segmentation, it is still a challenging problem due to false positives and the precise boundary detection required for segmentation. In this paper, we propose a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) based algorithm for segmenting the tumor in Breast Ultrasound images. The GAN model comprises of two modules: generator and discriminator. Residual-Dilated-Attention-Gate-UNet (RDAU-NET) is used as the generator which serves as a segmentation module and a CNN classifier is employed as the discriminator. To stabilize training, Wasserstein GAN (WGAN) algorithm has been used. The proposed hybrid deep learning model is called the WGAN-RDA-UNET. The model is assessed with several quantitative metrics and is also compared with existing methods both quantitatively and qualitatively. The overall Accuracy, PR-AUC, ROC-AUC and F1-score achieved were 0.98, 0.95, 0.89 and 0.88 respectively which are better than most conventional deep net models. The results also showcase the shortcomings of CNN, RDA U-Net and other models and how they can be rectified using the WGAN-RDA-UNET model.

RDA-UNET-WGAN: An Accurate Breast Ultrasound Lesion Segmentation Using Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Networks

Currently, the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is one of the biggest health crises threatening the world. Automatic detection from computed tomography (CT) scans is a classic method to detect lung infection, but it faces problems such as high variations in intensity, indistinct edges near lung infected region and noise due to data acquisition process. Therefore, this article proposes a new COVID-19 pulmonary infection segmentation depth network referred as the Attention Gate-Dense Network- Improved Dilation Convolution-UNET (ADID-UNET). The dense network replaces convolution and maximum pooling function to enhance feature propagation and solves gradient disappearance problem. An improved dilation convolution is used to increase the receptive field of the encoder output to further obtain more edge features from the small infected regions. The integration of attention gate into the model suppresses the background and improves prediction accuracy. The experimental results show that the ADID-UNET model can accurately segment COVID-19 lung infected areas, with performance measures greater than 80% for metrics like Accuracy, Specificity and Dice Coefficient (DC). Further when compared to other state-of-the-art architectures, the proposed model showed excellent segmentation effects with a high DC and F1 score of 0.8031 and 0.82 respectively.

ADID-UNET—a segmentation model for COVID-19 infection from lung CT scans

Premise Digitized images of herbarium specimens are highly diverse with many potential sources of visual noise and bias. The systematic removal of noise and minimization of bias must be achieved in order to generate biological insights based on the plants rather than the digitization and mounting practices involved. Here, we develop a workflow and data set of high-resolution image masks to segment plant tissues in herbarium specimen images and remove background pixels using deep learning. Methods and Results We generated 400 curated, high-resolution masks of ferns using a combination of automatic and manual tools for image manipulation. We used those images to train a U-Net-style deep learning model for image segmentation, achieving a final Sorensen-Dice coefficient of 0.96. The resulting model can automatically, efficiently, and accurately segment massive data sets of digitized herbarium specimens, particularly for ferns. Conclusions The application of deep learning in herbarium sciences requires transparent and systematic protocols for generating training data so that these labor-intensive resources can be generalized to other deep learning applications. Segmentation ground-truth masks are hard-won data, and we share these data and the model openly in the hopes of furthering model training and transfer learning opportunities for broader herbarium applications.

Generating segmentation masks of herbarium specimens and a data set for training segmentation models using deep learning

Applying machine learning technologies, especially deep learning, into medical image segmentation is being widely studied because of its state-of-the-art performance and results. It can be a key step to provide a reliable basis for clinical diagnosis, such as 3D reconstruction of human tissues, image-guided interventions, image analyzing and visualization. In this review article, deep-learning-based methods for ultrasound image segmentation are categorized into six main groups according to their architectures and training at first. Secondly, for each group, several current representative algorithms are selected, introduced, analyzed and summarized in detail. In addition, common evaluation methods for image segmentation and ultrasound image segmentation datasets are summarized. Further, the performance of the current methods and their evaluations are reviewed. In the end, the challenges and potential research directions for medical ultrasound image segmentation are discussed.
