It is likely that a half-century ago even enthusiastic and optimistic proponents of the synthetic polymer industry (Mr. McGuire included) could not have predicted the massive scale on which synthetic polymers would be manufactured and used today. Ultimately, the future success of this industry will rely on the development of sustainable polymers—materials derived from renewable feedstocks that are safe in both production and use and that can be recycled or disposed of in ways that are environmentally innocuous. Meeting these criteria in an economical manner cannot be achieved without transformative basic research that is the hallmark of this journal. In this Perspective we highlight five research topics—the synthesis of renewable monomers and of degradable polymers, the development of chemical recycling strategies, new classes of reprocessable thermosets, and the design of advanced catalysts—that we believe will play a vital role in the development of sustainable polymers. 50th Anniversary Perspective: There Is a Great Future in Sustainable Polymers

Dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) have received significant attention over the past decade. These are covalent bonds that are capable of exchanging or switching between several molecules. Particular focus has recently been on utilizing these DCBs in polymeric materials. Introduction of DCBs into a polymer material provides it with powerful properties including self-healing, shape-memory properties, increased toughness, and ability to relax stresses as well as to change from one macromolecular architecture to another. This Minireview summarizes commonly used powerful DCBs formed by simple, often "click" reactions, and highlights the powerful materials that can result. Challenges and potential future developments are also discussed.

Dynamic Covalent Bonds in Polymeric Materials

Cross-linked polymers are ubiquitous in daily life, finding applications as tires, insulation, adhesives, automotive parts, and countless other products. The covalent cross-links in these materials render them mechanically robust, chemically resistant, and thermally stable, but they also prevent recycling of these materials into similar-value goods. Furthermore, cross-linked polymers are typically produced from petroleum-based feedstocks, and their hydrocarbon backbones render them nondegradable, making them unsustainable in the long term. In recent years, much effort has focused on the development of recycling strategies for cross-linked polymeric materials. Approaches to Sustainable and Continually Recyclable Cross-Linked Polymers

Vitrimers: Permanently crosslinked polymers with dynamic network topology

Vitrimers are cross-linked polymer networks containing linkages that undergo thermally activated, associative exchange reactions, such that the cross-link density and overall network connectivity are preserved. Polycarbonates are industrially relevant polymers that, to our knowledge, have not yet been explored as vitrimers. We developed hydroxyl-functionalized polycarbonate networks that undergo transcarbonation exchange reactions at elevated temperatures in the presence of catalytic Ti(IV) alkoxides. The rate of transcarbonation within the networks, estimated through stress relaxation experiments, was tuned by adjusting the catalyst loading or hydroxyl group concentration in the networks. The polymer networks exhibit recovery of their tensile strength and plateau storage modulus (71–133%) after reprocessing. In addition to being reprocessable, the networks were hydrolyzed and decarboxylated in aqueous acid to recover 80 wt % of the precursor to the bifunctional cyclic carbonate monomer. Reprocessable Acid-Degradable Polycarbonate Vitrimers

Reinforced silica–epoxy vitrimer nanocomposites have been made in a solvent-free, easily processable, and economical way with filler contents up to 40 wt %. Increasing silica content leads to higher modulus materials in both glassy and rubbery regions. These nanocomposites are insoluble like permanent cross-linked networks but can completely relax stresses by thermoactivated exchange reactions that rearrange the network topology. Furthermore, the surface functionalization of particles improves the dispersion of fillers and accelerates the relaxation process. Similar results were obtained with industrial precipitated silica, which would allow vitrimer nanocomposites to be produced on an industrial scale.
