The medicinal and aromatic plants as ingredients in functional beverage production

The accurate prediction of the state of health for retired batteries is the premise to ensure the safe and efficient operation of echelon utilization batteries. Aiming at the problems of limited battery cycle data and coupling of health status parameters, an assessment method of the state of health for echelon utilization batteries based on deep neural network learning with error correction is proposed in this paper. According to the reference discharge curve of echelon utilization batteries, the main characteristic parameters characterizing the performance aging of echelon utilization batteries are mined, and the state of health evaluation model of echelon utilization batteries based on deep neural network learning is established after the dimensionality of these characteristic parameters are reduced by the grey correlation analysis method. Markov chain error correction is used to further improve the prediction accuracy of the established deep neural network model. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the simulation analysis of lithium-ion battery cycle test data from NASA Ames Prediction Center of Excellence. The simulation results show that the average absolute errors of the state of health prediction for echelon utilization batteries are less than 0.8% after the deep neural network learning prediction model is modified by Markov chain error, which provides a theoretical basis for the safe and stable operation of echelon utilization batteries. 

State of health assessment for echelon utilization batteries based on deep neural network learning with error correction

In recent years, the development of new bio-based products for biocontrol has been gaining importance as it contributes to reducing the use of synthetic herbicides in agriculture. Conventional herbicides (i.e., the ones with synthetic molecules) can lead to adverse effects such as human diseases (cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, reproductive perturbations, etc.) but also to disturbing the environment because of their drift in the air, transport throughout aquatic systems and persistence across different environments. The use of natural molecules seems to be a very good alternative for maintaining productive agriculture but without the negative side effects of synthetic herbicides. In this context, essential oils and their components are increasingly studied in order to produce several categories of biopesticides thanks to their well-known biocidal activities. However, these molecules can also be potentially hazardous to humans and the environment. This article reviews the state of the literature and regulations with regard to the potential risks related to the use of essential oils as bioherbicides in agricultural and horticultural applications.

Simultaneous Correlation of Liquid-liquid Equilibria for Ternary Systems and Phase Equilibria for Constituent Binary Systems by Modified New Activity Coefficient Model

A water stationary phase is explored as a novel means of selectively separating unsaturated analytes in gas chromatography. Several unsaturated/saturated analyte pairs consisting mainly of carboxylic acids and alcohols were examined using both a 30-m conventional non-polar HP-5 column and an 11-m water phase column. For most investigated on the HP-5 column, analytes often eluted very close to each other (~ 6–12 s apart) with poor resolution. By comparison, the shorter water phase column well separated each of the analogue pairs by about 3–8 min or more. As well on the water phase, analytes with a triple bond were much more retained than those with two double bonds, which in turn were much more retained than those with one double bond. Conversely, on the HP-5 column these were poorly separated if at all. Additionally, cis/trans isomers were baseline resolved on the water phase but co-eluted on a 30-m conventional polar Carbowax column. Similarly, positional isomers varying the location of the double bond were found to separate with a selectivity value near 1.1 on the Carbowax column, whereas on the water phase column they yielded a value of 1.3 and eluted in the reverse order. Addition of various metal ion salts to the water phase was explored. While Ca2+ ion produced modest increases in selectivity, the addition of Ag+ ion was most influential and further increased the original water phase selectivity by a factor of 2.3. The mechanistic implications of OH–-pi bonding in the water phase was discussed as a potential origin for the selectivity observed. The method was applied to gasoline, essential oil, and food stuff analysis. Results indicate that this method could be a very useful means of selectively separating such unsaturated analytes.

Selective Separation of Polar Unsaturated Organics Using a Water Stationary Phase in Gas Chromatography

Nowadays, almost 300 essential oils (EOs) are commonly traded in the world market, with a prediction to be worth over $14 billion in 2024. EOs are natural preservatives for food products in order to reduce the activity of pathogenic microorganisms, therefore their use as an antioxidant or a preservative in foods has been encouraged. They are not only considered as antimicrobial or flavoring agents, but are also incorporated into food packaging materials. There are several types of EOs which have been approved as food additives by the Food and Drug Administration. Hence, it is important to use safe EO products to minimize possible adverse effect risks such as nausea, vomiting, necrosis, nephropathy, mucous membrane, and skin irritation. This review article gives information about some EOs that are used in the food industries and the types of some allergenic compounds and biocides which could make the EOs hazardous or may cause allergenic reactions in the human body. Besides, some analysis techniques of possible allergenic compounds or biocides in EOs were introduced and supported with the most relevant studies. The overall conclusion from the study is that pregnant women, patients taking drugs (e.g., diabetics) or the having a history of allergy are the most prone to be affected from EO allergenic components. As regards to biocides, organochlorine and organophosphorus types of pesticides that are carried over from the plant may be found mostly in EOs. The most common allergic reaction is skin sensitization and irritation if the EO components are oxidized during storage or transportation. Moreover, drug interactions are one of the other possible adverse effect. Hence, determination of biocides and possible allergenic component concentrations is an essential factor when they are used as a preservative or flavoring agent. The most prominent analysis techniques are gas and liquid chromatography because most of the allergens and biocides are mainly composed of volatile components. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Determining of the essential oil's content will be crucial if oils are used for food preservation or flavoring because they may have some hazardous effects, such as nausea, vomiting, necrosis and nephropathy. Therefore, after applying them to the food products, consumers (especially pregnant women) should be informed about their concentration levels and their possible adverse effects are taken into account when they are consumed over toxic limit. For this reason, we reviewed in our study that some allergenic components, biocides and toxic limits of EOs to be used in food products. In addition to this, recent analytical techniques have been explained and discussed which methods are suitable for analysis.
