A new statistic has been developed to quantify the amount of regularity in data. This statistic, ApEn (approximate entropy), appears to have potential application throughout medicine, notably in electrocardiogram and related heart rate data analyses and in the analysis of endocrine hormone release pulsatility. The focus of this article is ApEn. We commence with a simple example of what we are trying to discern. We then discuss exact regularity statistics and practical difficulties of using them in data analysis. The mathematic formula development for ApEn concludes the Solution section. We next discuss the two key input requirements, followed by an account of a pilot study successfully applying ApEn to neonatal heart rate analysis. We conclude with the important topic of ApEn as a relative (not absolute) measure, potential applications, and some caveats about appropriate usage of ApEn. Appendix A provides example ApEn and entropy computations to develop intuition about these measures. Appendix B contains a Fortran program for computing ApEn. This article can be read from at least three viewpoints. The practitioner who wishes to use a "black box" to measure regularity should concentrate on the exact formula, choices for the two input variables, potential applications, and caveats about appropriate usage. The physician who wishes to apply ApEn to heart rate analysis should particularly note the pilot study discussion. Objective The effect of colonoscopy on colorectal cancer mortality is limited by several factors, among them a certain miss rate, leading to limited adenoma detection rates (ADRs). We investigated the effect of an automatic polyp detection system based on deep learning on polyp detection rate and ADR. Design In an open, non-blinded trial, consecutive patients were prospectively randomised to undergo diagnostic colonoscopy with or without assistance of a real-time automatic polyp detection system providing a simultaneous visual notice and sound alarm on polyp detection. The primary outcome was ADR. Results Of 1058 patients included, 536 were randomised to standard colonoscopy, and 522 were randomised to colonoscopy with computer-aided diagnosis. The artificial intelligence (AI) system significantly increased ADR (29.1%vs20.3%, p Conclusions In a low prevalent ADR population, an automatic polyp detection system during colonoscopy resulted in a significant increase in the number of diminutive adenomas detected, as well as an increase in the rate of hyperplastic polyps. Real-time automatic detection system increases colonoscopic polyp and adenoma detection rates: a prospective randomised controlled study.

This paper presents Smart-EEG, a telemedicine project aiming to improve remote diagnosis of brain diseases. Those exams are commonly done by acquiring EEG, ECG, EOG, EMG and a video of the scene. Nowadays, systems uses video acquisition limited to standard frame-rate (30 fps) and unreliable synchronization mechanism. Those current limitations may lead to wrong diagnosis of a patient. To get around those limitation, the system architecture is centered around a hardware acquisition system handling synchronization and compression and a self contained EEG exam file to permit remote diagnosis. Smart-EEG: a Tele-medicine System for EEG Exams

La segmentation en images medicales souleve tres souvent des difficultes particulieres liees a la specificite des images traitees : varietes des donnees (IRM, CT, PET-SCAN, Scintigraphie), varietes des bruits associes (gaussien, poissonnien, ricien, de Rayleigh), variabilite de la resolution... Recemment, des methodes tres prometteuses de segmentation utilisant des modeles de contours actifs implicites (level-set) integrant la mise en competition des histogrammes representatifs des densites de probabilites de l'organe a segmenter et du reste de l'image avec les histogrammes, respectivement, interieur et exterieur au contour actif ont ete proposes dans la litterature. Neanmoins, a ce jour aucune etude comparative quantitative des differentes distances entre histogrammes utilisees pour generer la force d'evolution du contour actif n'a ete proposee. Dans cette communication, nous nous attachons a tester ces differentes distances (Chi2, Kullback-Leibler, Hellinger, Wasserstein) dans le cadre d'une implantation parametrique des contours actifs (modelisation par B-spline cubique du contour) et a les comparer quantitativement. Nous nous interessons egalement a la modelisation des histogrammes de references (fond et organe) : une approche parametrique prenant en compte l'a priori sur les bruits relatifs a la modalite d'acquisition, et une methode par estimation non-parametrique des histogrammes (noyau de Parzen) sont proposes. Des resultats sont presentes, premierement sur une image synthetique presentant differents niveaux de bruit, et, deuxiemement, dans le cadre d'une application a la segmentation de la vessie en IRM, etape importante pour la mise en place du planning de radiotherapie du cancer de la prostate.

that the detection of fibrous tissues surrounding the electrode,
that usually affect the operation of the implant, is an open
research problem. Because of this, this article defines its
performance on living cells under in-vitro experimentation
where the proliferation of cells are matched with the results.
Furthermore, traditional EIS techniques, such as frequency
sweep and multi-sine are compared to OFDM-EIS.

Non-linear or anisotropic regularization PDE's (Partial Differential Equation) raised a strong interest in the field of medical image processing. The benefit of PDE-based regularization methods lies in the ability to smooth data in a nonlinear way, allowing the preservation of important image features (contours, corners or other discontinuities). In this article, we propose a PDE-based method restoration approach integrating a double-well potential as diffusive function. It is shown that this particular potential leads to a particular regularization PDE which makes the integration of prior knowledge about the gradient intensity level to enhance possible. The corresponding method shows interesting properties regarding stability and preservation of fine structures. As a proof a feasibility, results of restoration are presented on natural images to show potentialities of the proposed method. We also address a particular medical application: enhancement of tagged cardiac MRI.
