A “fracture testing” based approach to assess crack healing of concrete with and without crystalline admixtures

Challenging studies of engineered self-healing and self-repairing functions in concrete structures are briefly reviewed. While self-healing of concrete has been studied for a long time, it was only recently noticed that some engineered technologies are useful to stimulate the potential of concrete to be self-healed. For example, fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) have a much higher potential of self-healing than ordinary concrete because of their capability to keep cracks thinner and also because of the bridging network system in cracks; a specific bio-chemical approach, i.e. the application of mineral-precipitating bacteria, is now available; and various mineral admixtures are useful for practical application. Furthermore, the new concept of self-repairing concrete, which is based on the design concept of intelligent materials, is reported. Self-repairing concrete is concrete that incorporates devices for achieving the three key functions of an intelligent material, (1) sensing, (2) processing, and (3) actuating. This paper is a state-of-the-art report on the recent development of engineered self-healing and self-repairing concrete.

Review of potential structural applications of hybrid fiber Engineered Cementitious Composites

The project detailed in this paper aims at a thorough characterization of the effects of crystalline admixtures, currently employed as porosity reducing admixtures, on the self-healing capacity of the cementitious composites, i.e. their capacity to completely or partially re-seal cracks and, in case, also exhibit recovery of mechanical properties. The problem has been investigated with reference to both a normal strength concrete (NSC) and a high performance fibre reinforced cementitious composite (HPFRCC). In the latter case, the influence of flow-induced fibre alignment has also been considered in the experimental investigation. With reference to either 3-point (for NSC) or 4-point (for HPFRCC) bending tests performed up to controlled crack opening and up to failure, respectively before and after exposure/conditioning recovery of stiffness and stress bearing capacity has been evaluated to assess the self-healing capacity. In a durability-based design framework, self-healing indices to quantify the recovery of mechanical properties will also be defined. In NSC, crystalline admixtures are able to promote up to 60% of crack sealing even under exposure to open air. In the case of HPFRCCs, which would already feature autogenous healing capacity because of their peculiar mix compositions, the synergy between the dispersed fibre reinforcement and the action of the crystalline admixture has resulted in a likely 'chemical pre-stressing' of the same reinforcement, from which the recovery of mechanical performance of the material has greatly benefited, up to levels even higher than the performance of the virgin un-cracked material.

Corrosion of steel bars embedded in fibre reinforced concrete under chloride attack: State of the art

For the purpose of global sustainability the long life of structures is essential and the durability performance of reinforced concrete structures is one of the key issues to be resolved. This paper reports the results of a series of long term corrosion tests on fiber reinforced cementitious composites containing polyethylene (PE) alone and hybrid steel cord (SC) and PE fibers. The results are also compared with ordinary mortar. The specimens are subjected to accelerated corrosion for one year by applying external potential to the steel bar anode and a cathode made out of a steel wire mesh placed outside the concrete. Durability performances of the specimens are examined through regular monitoring of the time to initiate corrosion, the corrosion area ratio, corrosion depth, and the amount of steel loss. Results show that the hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composites (HFRCC) containing hybrid SC and PE fibers exhibited excellent performance compared to mortar and fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) containing PE fiber. The order of the durability performance is HFRCC, FRCC, and Mortar. It is observed that the sacrificial corrosion of some of the SC fibers in the HFRCC specimen played an important role in the significant reduction of steel bar corrosion in the specimen.
