Screening of Zingiberaceae extracts for antimicrobial and antioxidant activities.

Fumigant toxicity of essential oils from three Thai plants (Zingiberaceae) and their major compounds against Sitophilus zeamais, Tribolium castaneum and two parasitoids

Zerumbone (ZER) is a naturally occurring dietary compound, present in many natural foods consumed today. The compound derived from several plant species of the Zingiberaceae family that has been found to possess multiple biomedical properties, such as antiproliferative, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. However, evidence of efficacy is sparse, pointing to the need for a more systematic review for assessing scientific evidence to support therapeutic claims made for ZER and to identify future research needs. This review provides an updated overview of in vitro and in vivo investigations of ZER, its cancer chemopreventive properties, and mechanisms of action. Therapeutic effects of ZER were found to be scientifically plausible and could be explained partially by in vivo and in vitro pharmacological activities. Much of the research outlined in this paper will serve as a foundation to explain ZER anticancer bioactivity, which will open the door for the development of strategies in the treatment of malignancies using ZER.

Biomedical Properties of a Natural Dietary Plant Metabolite, Zerumbone, in Cancer Therapy and Chemoprevention Trials

Essential oils of Alpinia conchigera Griff. and their antimicrobial activities

The volatile constituents of the leaves and flowers of Alpinia speciosa and Alpinia purpurata growing wild in North Brazil were analysed by GC–MS. The main constituents identified in the leaf oil of A. speciosa were limonene (25.1%), terpinen-4-ol (22.7%) and γ-terpinene (17.4%). The oil obtained from flowers of A. speciosa was dominated by 1,8-cineole (23.1%), terpinen-4-ol (20.4%) and sabinene (14.5%). The major components identified in the leaf oil of A. purpurata were 1,8-cineole (21.8%), β-pinene (15.3%) and (E)-methyl cinnamate (12.9%). The oil obtained from flowers of A. purpurata was dominated by β-pinene (27.8%) and α-pinene (16.9%). Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The essential oil isolated by hydrodistillation from the fresh rhizomes of Alpinia conchigera Griff was analyzed by capillary GC and GC/MS. More than 40 constituents were present in the oil, from which 34 components could be identified. The major components include β-sesquiphellandrene (20.5%), β-bisabolene (12.1%) and 1,8-cineole (11.6%).

The essential oil of the rhizomes of Zingiber ottensii Valeton of Malaysia has been analyzed by a combination of capillary GC and GC/M S. Twenty-six components have been identified of which the major component was found to be zerumbone (25.6%)

Students are the most valuable asset to a country. The success of students in learning science and mathematics not only depends on how well the educators look into the students’ needs per se but also and the interactions of both parties during teaching and learning processes. Therefore, this research was carried out to gather information and to formulate the standard criteria for teaching and learning science and mathematics. The research instruments were the set of questionnaires that were designed to identify students’ abilities, background, perception, students’ interests and motivation, multiple intelligents, thinking styles, learning style and creativity on teaching and learning science and mathematics. The respondent consists of 101 second year and 104 third year students who have taken science and mathematics programs. The research found out that there are interesting patterns of students’ performance according to their characteristics. Finally, the findings revealed that there are challenges for the science and mathematics educator to make use students’ characteristics to promote optimum learning among students.
