Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is one of the earliest non-traditional machining processes. EDM process is based on thermoelectric energy between the work piece and an electrode. A pulse discharge occurs in a small gap between the work piece and the electrode and removes the unwanted material from the parent metal through melting and vaporising. The electrode and the work piece must have electrical conductivity in order to generate the spark. There are various types of products which can be produced using EDM such as dies and moulds. Parts of aerospace, automotive industry and surgical components can be finished by EDM. This paper reviews the research trends in EDM on ultrasonic vibration, dry EDM machining, EDM with powder additives, EDM in water and modeling technique in predicting EDM performances.

Growth Promotion of Plants Inoculated with Phosphate-Solubilizing Fungi

EDM is a well-established hole machining option with various advantages due to non-contact characteristics of the process. However, knowledge about the process is not enough for its more improvements. Exprimenal studies are costly and time consuming because of the complex nature of process. Therefore, process modeling is a good alternative to reduce the experimental expense related to the technology. This paper studys EDM process through mathematical model, which includes the precise insight into the interactive behavior of EDM system. The ignition, discharge and recovery phases of the model have been developed through MATLABs time domain analysis. Simulation result shows good agreement with expected profile of EDM spark. To verify the model, simulated material removal rates (MRRs) from series of simulation are compared with the experimental ones reported by previous researcher. Ability of the model to predict the dynamic behavior profile of the EDM system is successfully confirmed by low average percentage error in predicting MRR.

EDM process through mathematical model

Complex continuous care process of patients suffering from thalassemia is largely due to a collection of a large volume of diverse data, which makes traditional paper-based approach burdensome. Adoption of electronic medical records (EMR) system is the best solution in this situation because of the documented benefits in previous studies. Unfortunately, current implementation rate of the system, especially in Malaysia, found to be poor. Studies showed that it is related to low acceptance level towards the system. Previous studies recommend collaboration with targeted end-users during system development stages. Therefore, this article investigated and proposed a framework for online Thalassemia medical record management system which developed with the involvement of the targeted users, which are doctor and nurse. Paediatric Day Care Unit in Hospital Sultanah Aminah was selected for the setting of this study. In this study, previously gathered user requirement was analysed to produce the system framework, which then was used to develop the prototype. Usability and acceptance testing of the system prototype was conducted, from which questionnaires and interviews were given to 3 doctors and 3 nurses. System Usability Scale (SUS) was used and the mean final score was 68.75 with standard deviation 5.352, which is slightly above average. The results also support the previous study which found a significant negative correlation between SUS score and age. The results of the user acceptance testing (UAT) showed a very positive and encouraging feedback from the users. In conclusion, the framework proposed in this study can be accepted and used as a reference for any effort to develop a similar system.

Online framework for thalassemia medical record management system

In high workload areas such as the Intensive or Critical Care Units (ICU/CCU), clinicians are burdened with too many alarms and false alarms, leading to poor user response or no response to alarm signals, which in turn leads to serious patient safety concerns, adverse events such as injury and deaths. Even with the implementation of the IEC international alarm standard, alarm hazards are still seen as the top health technology hazard in healthcare institutions. There are numerous new developments in alarm technology, including in the areas of alarm detection and smart alarm design, aimed at improving the sensitivity and performance of alarm systems. However, there is still a lack of studies on the application of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) principles and AI in designing alarms for medical devices that could improve user response and ensure patient safety. This research aims to develop a fuzzy logic base multimodality clinical alarm monitor software to improve alarm response among the clinicians in ICU/CCU and the performance of the clinical alarm. The research involves testing, verifying, and validating the fuzzy-based multimodality clinical alarm to improve the performance of the alarm system. The proposed fuzzy alarm is compared to the medical professional interpretation of a patient physiological condition extracted from the MIMIC II database. The results show that the proposed fuzzy alarm can match the interpretation of medical professionals with high accuracy. In terms of sensitivity and specificity, the proposed alarms achieve good performance with blood pressure and heart rate specificity and sensitivity at 100%. Meanwhile, sensitivity and specificity for respiratory rate are at 97.59% and 99.68%, while sensitivity and specificity for oxygen saturation are at 100% and 98.04%, respectively. The research concluded that incorporating alarm information systems based on risk, human factor engineering principles, and fuzzy logic into the alarm system significantly improves user response while reducing alarm hazards and optimising the performance of the alarm system.

Fuzzy Based Multimodality Clinical Alarm in ICU/CCU

One of the latest non-traditional machining processes and controlled process is presented as Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) that the pulsed electrical discharge is used to erode metal in a work piece. The voltage pulse discharge occurs when EDM pulsed power generator is applied on a workpiece. The discharge happens in a small gap between the work piece and the electrode. The important function of EDM is to obtain the output waveform parallel with the ideal EDM waveform. Additionally, the EDM design is according to the transistor kind pulse power generator circuit. The present paper seeks to discuss on the current modeling and voltage gap waveform intended for the system in EDM process. Based on the derived equation, the simulation is done using electrical model in Matlab Simulink software and circuit analysis in Lapels transform in EDM process.

Design and Model Analysis of Pulse Generator in Electrical Discharge Machines (EDM) System Using in the Laplace Transform

Power and endurance athletes have different physiological and metabolic properties of their skeletal muscle. The aim of this study was to compare the muscle activation between these two types of athletes by evaluating the muscle performance accessed from various types of lower limb muscles. A total of 27 subjects; 14 power athletes, and 13 endurance athletes voluntarily participated in this study. Electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded from five lower limb muscles; vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius and soleus muscle of dominant leg using wireless electromyography system. EMG signals were analysed by extracting several time and frequency domain features in order to evaluate the contribution of each muscles in distinguishing between power and endurance athletes. Comparison between groups was quantified and evaluated by Mann-Whitney U Test. Result showed that significant difference (p < 0.05) was found only in vastus lateralis, rectus femoris and tibialis anterior muscle for several EMG features. Meanwhile, no group differences were observed for gastrocnemius and soleus muscle in all features. Finding shows that physiological differences between power and endurance athletes was much easier to be accessed from vastus lateralis muscle as indicated by significant test result of most selected EMG features.
