There is a clear trend in the automotive industry to use more electrical systems in order to satisfy the ever-growing vehicular load demands. Thus, it is imperative that automotive electrical power systems will obviously undergo a drastic change in the next 10-20 years. Currently, the situation in the automotive industry is such that the demands for higher fuel economy and more electric power are driving advanced vehicular power system voltages to higher levels. For example, the projected increase in total power demand is estimated to be about three to four times that of the current value. This means that the total future power demand of a typical advanced vehicle could roughly reach a value as high as 10 kW. In order to satisfy this huge vehicular load, the approach is to integrate power electronics intensive solutions within advanced vehicular power systems. In view of this fact, this paper aims at reviewing the present situation as well as projected future research and development work of advanced vehicular electrical power systems including those of electric, hybrid electric, and fuel cell vehicles (EVs, HEVs, and FCVs). The paper will first introduce the proposed power system architectures for HEVs and FCVs and will then go on to exhaustively discuss the specific applications of dc/dc and dc/ac power electronic converters in advanced automotive power systems

Power electronics intensive solutions for advanced electric, hybrid electric, and fuel cell vehicular power systems

Extensive research done in the recent past has proven that power electronic converters and electric propulsion motors are extremely critical components for modern hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) propulsion applications. Therefore, it is essential that both the traction motor and the associated drive operate at their optimal efficiencies throughout the driving schedule. In typical HEV propulsion applications, the traction motor and the drive are used over the entire torque/speed operational range. In view of this fact, this paper aims at modeling the inverter and motor losses/efficiencies over typical city and highway driving schedules. The noteworthy losses within a typical three-phase dc/ac traction inverter, such as the switching and conduction losses for both the insulated-gate bipolar transistors and the antiparallel diodes, are modeled and simulated over the city and highway driving patterns. An induction motor (IM) is used for a medium-sized sport utility vehicle, which was modeled in the advanced vehicle simulator (ADVISOR) software. The significant IM losses that were considered in the study include the stator copper losses, rotor copper losses, and core losses. Thus, the average efficiencies of both the inverter drive and the induction traction motor are evaluated and summarized under city as well as highway driving conditions. Finally, based on the individual-model-based efficiency analysis, the overall traction motor drive system efficiency is estimated.

Comprehensive Efficiency Modeling of Electric Traction Motor Drives for Hybrid Electric Vehicle Propulsion Applications

This paper proposes a dual-space vector control scheme for the open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) drive fed by the dual inverter with a single dc supply. Potential zero-sequence current in the open-end winding drive system has to be considered since it causes circulating current in the winding and leads to high current stress of power semiconductor devices and high losses. Zero-sequence current in open-end winding ac motor drives is usually caused by the zero-sequence voltage, and therefore switching combinations which do not produce zero-sequence voltage are used to synthesize the reference voltage in existing methods. But even so, the zero-sequence voltage can also be produced by the dead time of the inverter. In order to suppress zero-sequence current in the OEW-PMSM drive, a dual-space vector control scheme is proposed and a novel dual-inverter space vector pulse width modulation (PWM) with the zero-sequence voltage reference is employed to regulate system zero-sequence voltage in this paper. Compared with existing dual inverter PWM strategies, the novel algorithm build a regulation mechanism for the zero-sequence voltage. The proposed method is compared with the conventional vector control by simulations and experiments, and the results shown that the proposed scheme can suppress zero-sequence current effectively.

Dual-Space Vector Control of Open-End Winding Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drive Fed by Dual Inverter

This paper presents and compares control strategies for three-phase open-end winding drives operating in the flux-weakening region. A six-leg inverter with a single dc link is associated with the machine in order to use a single energy source. With this topology, the zero-sequence circuit has to be considered since the zero-sequence current can circulate in the windings. Therefore, conventional overmodulation strategies are not appropriate when the machine enters in the flux-weakening region. A few solutions dealing with the zero-sequence circuit have been proposed in the literature. They use a modified space vector modulation or a conventional modulation with additional voltage limitations. This paper describes the aforementioned strategies, and then, a new strategy is proposed. This new strategy takes into account the magnitudes and phase angles of the voltage harmonic components. This yields better voltage utilization in the dq frame. Furthermore, inverter saturation is avoided in the zero-sequence frame, and therefore, zero-sequence current control is maintained. Three methods are implemented on a test bed composed of a three-phase permanent-magnet synchronous machine, a six-leg inverter, and a hybrid digital signal processor /field-programmable gate array controller. Experimental results are presented and compared for all strategies. A performance analysis is conducted as regards the region of operation and the machine parameters.

Control Strategies for Open-End Winding Drives Operating in the Flux-Weakening Region

The paper presents a five-level inverter scheme with reduced power circuit complexity for an induction motor drive. The scheme is realized by cascading conventional two-level and three-level neutral point clamped inverters in conjunction with an open-end winding three-phase induction motor drive. An inverter control scheme with common-mode voltage (CMV) elimination, along with a simple DC link voltage control, is developed by using only switching states with zero CMV for the entire modulation range. Theoretical considerations are experimentally verified for a variety of operating conditions.

A Reduced-Switch-Count Five-Level Inverter With Common-Mode Voltage Elimination for an Open-End Winding Induction Motor Drive

The adoption of the 42 V Powernet standard has focused substantial research effort into the design of electric machines for hybrid vehicles. This letter investigates the potential performance benefits afforded by adopting a cascaded inverter topology on the overall system and motor performance. As a particular design example, this letter shows that a cascaded inverter driving an open winding motor can increase the high-speed power density of an induction motor by 73%. For an interior permanent magnet motor, the cascaded topology can increase low-speed torque by 9% and high-speed power by up to 300%. In all cases, the power increase is achieved without increasing the phase current over a more traditional system.
