SUMMARY

The Earth's crust is magnetized down to the Curie-temperature depth at about 10 to 50 km. This limited depth extent of the crustal magnetization is discernible in the power spectra of magnetic maps of South Africa and Central Asia. At short wavelengths, the power increases as rapidly towards longer wavelengths as expected for a self-similar magnetized crust with unlimited depth extent. Above wavelengths of about 100 km the power starts increasing less rapidly, indicating the absence of deep-seated sources. To quantify this effect we derive the theoretical power spectrum due to a slab carved out of a self-similar magnetization distribution. This model power spectrum matches the power spectra of South Africa and Central Asia for a self-similarity parameter of β= 4 and Curie temperature depths of 15 to 20 km.

Curie-temperature depth estimation using a self-similar magnetization model

Approximately 400 globally distributed xenolith samples are examined to determine whether continental regions are characterized by relatively magnetic crusts lying on relatively nonmagnetic mantles. Samples of mantle peridotites and mafic granulites by Wasilewski et al. (1979) are supplemented by samples of mantle and crustal xenoliths from Asia, North America, Africa, and Antarctica. The data indicate that a magnetic crustal layer overlies a nonmagnetic mantle much in the same manner as proposed by Jarchow and Thompson (1989). Nonmagnetic chrome spinels and magnesian ilmenites make up the ultramafic upper-mantle xenolith suite. Mafic rocks are the typically magnetic components of the crust, and induced magnetizations can account for long-wavelength magnetic anomalies measured remotely by aircraft and spacecraft.

The Moho as a magnetic boundary revisited

The magnetic fields experiment designed for the Mars Observer mission will provide definitive measurements of the Martian magnetic field from the transition and mapping orbits planned for the Mars Observer. The paper describes the instruments (which include a classical magnetometer and an electron reflection magnetometer) and techniques designed to investigate the nature of the Martian magnetic field and the Mars-solar wind interaction, the mapping of crustal magnetic fields, and studies of the Martian ionosphere, which are activities included in the Mars Observer mission objectives. Attention is also given to the flight software incorporated in the on-board data processor, and the procedures of data processing and analysis.

Mars Observer magnetic fields investigation

During the last 20 years, studies have been conducted regarding the regional, or long-wavelength, geomagnetic anomalies of the lower crust of the earth. The present paper is mainly concerned with the petrologic and geophysical interpretation of the observed features. Attention is given to magnetic mineralogy and magnetic properties of high-grade rocks from Lofoten and Vesteralen, regional geology and geophysics, field measurements and sampling, magnetic mineralogy of the lower crust, the effects of metamorphism upon magnetic mineralogy and magnetic properties of high-grade rocks, susceptibility-temperature relations and the Hopkinson effect, and petrologic sources of regional crustal magnetic anomalies.

Magnetization of lower crust and interpretation of regional magnetic anomalies: Example from Lofoten and Vesterålen, Norway

[1] The complex crustal structure of the boundary zone between the Iberian and European plates, from the western Pyrenees to the Cantabrian Mountains, is probed by three-dimensional (3-D) gravity and magnetic modeling constrained by deep seismic profiles. The 3-D modeling results support the presence of a continuous Iberian crustal root and suggest that the geometry of the orogenic belt that formed in latest Cretaceous-Tertiary times along the northern margin of Iberia was conditioned by oblique structures separating areas characterized by different tectonic styles. In the western Pyrenees and the Basque-Cantabrian basin (a thick Mesozoic basin presently incorporated to the Pyrenean-Cantabrian belt), the relatively narrow thinning of the crust inherited from the Mesozoic rifting stage conditioned a structural style in which portions of the southward indenting European lower crust are interpreted to be back thrusted toward the north and uplifted to shallow depths, promoting the appearance of significant potential field anomalies. In the Basque-Cantabrian basin, the strongest aeromagnetic anomaly of the whole Iberian Mainland is superimposed on the eastern part of a well-defined positive gravity anomaly, similar in amplitude and wavelength to those located along the North Pyrenean Zone. These observations suggest that the eastern part of the dense, lower crustal causative body is strongly magnetized and may correspond to a gabbroic cumulate originated in the axis of the ancient Mesozoic rift. To the west, Tertiary compression affected the North Iberian (Cantabrian) passive continental margin, whose geometry and inherited structures conditioned the formation of a double crustal delamination and the uplift of the Cantabrian Mountains.

Three‐dimensional gravity and magnetic modeling of crustal indentation and wedging in the western Pyrenees‐Cantabrian Mountains

A review is conducted of studies performed during the Magsat project. The obtained data are considered, taking into account questions of data availability, aspects of orbit attitude determination, ionospheric noise, a field model, and an anomaly field presentation. Models for interpretation are discussed, giving attention to forward modeling, and equivalent layer inverse modeling. In an evaluation of rock property constraints, the magnetic bottom is discussed along with Curie points, metamorphism and magnetization, and the direction of magnetization.

A review of problems and progress in studies of satellite magnetic anomalies

An equivalent source model solution of the satellite magnetic field over Australia obtained by Mayhew et al. (1980) showed that the satellite anomalies could be related to geological features in Australia. When the processing and selection of the Magsat data over the Australian region had progressed to the point where interpretation procedures could be initiated, it was decided to start by attempting to model the Broken Ridge satellite anomaly, which represents one of the very few relatively isolated anomalies in the Magsat maps, with an unambiguous source region. Attention is given to details concerning the Broken Ridge satellite magnetic anomaly, the modeling method used, the Broken Ridge models, modeling results, and characteristics of magnetization.
