Improved drives and controls for an exhaust gas turbocharger for an internal combustion engine in which the turbocharger is primarily driven by exhaust gases from the engine include an auxiliary hydraulic turbine which also has a driving connection to the turbocharger and which receives pressurized fluid from a fixed displacement pump to drive the turbine during certain operating conditions of the engine. The pump is connected to a rotary output shaft of the engine by means of a clutch member which selectively connects and disconnects the pump in response to a preselected operating characteristic of the engine. Such operating characteristic is selected from the group consisting of at least one of the engine speed, oil pressure, air manifold pressure, exhaust manifold pressure, and fueling rate characteristics of the engine. In a specific embodiment, the clutch is disconnected after the engine reaches a predetermined operating speed, as measured by a sensing unit or tachometer responsive directly to engine shaft speed, by sensing the pressure at which fluid is discharged from the pump and which corresponds to the preselected engine speed. In a preferred embodiment, the clutch control is also responsive to one of the operating characteristics of the engine for automatically disengaging the clutch in response to load conditions below a selected predetermined minimum, for example when the engine fuel demand rate is below 80 percent of the demand rate for maximum torque at a particular speed.

Internal combustion engine turbocharger drives and controls

A two speed supercharger system ( 20 ) for an internal combustion engine. The supercharger system includes a supercharger pump ( 40 ) that is driven by the engine via a gear box ( 34 ). The gear box includes two planetary gear sets ( 54, 70 ) and a controllable clutch ( 66 ). A controller ( 35 ) selectively activates the clutch to control the transition between the two speeds to assure a smooth transition without sudden changes in torque output.

Two speed supercharger drive

A power plant in which a turbine is driven by the combustion products of hydrocarbon fuel, air under superatomspheric pressure, and the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine. Air is supplied by a compressor which is driven by the turbine.

Internal combustion engine with afterburner, venturi cooler and exhaust turbine

An internal combustion engine assembly of the compound type for vehicles comprises an internal combustion engine, a turbine and a transmission arranged between the turbine and a crankshaft forming part of the engine. The turbine is designed to be driven by exhaust gases from the engine. On the rear end of the crankshaft a gear wheel is mounted. On this gear wheel there is formed a flange which functions as an extension of the crankshaft and attachment for a flywheel. With the present invention, it is possible to transmit the power from the turbine to the crankshaft without modifying the ring gear of the flywheel. The invention also affords advantages in terms of manufacturing, assembly and maintenance technology.

Flywheel attachment for an internal combustion engine having an exhaust gas turbine geared to the crankshaft

The gas-turbine unit has the compressor rotor and the turbine wheel mounted next to one another on the same shaft (14), with diffusor blades (52) on the radial outside of the rotor positioned on one side of a plate (54) which has turbine blades (56) on the other side and openings leading to cooling channels in the turbine blades. The turbine blades and the compressor blades may be provided by a single one-piece rotor, the turbine rotor enclosed by a double-walled housing (64,102) for passage of the cooling gas flow.

Gas turbine assembly for air conditioning

Turbocharger drive having planetary gear units in a gear train between an engine crankshaft and a compressor rotor, which rotates to supply air to an engine for combustion. The reaction member of a planetary unit of the gear train is connected to the pump of a hydrodynamic unit while the turbine member is grounded so that the stall torque of the unit retards rotation of the reaction member to permit the engine crankshaft to drive the rotor through the gear train. The hydrodynamic unit having an infinite number of spring rates provides an infinitely flexible device for reducing transmission of engine torsionals and shock loads through the gear train. The mechanical drive is assisted by a gas drive from the engine exhaust which progressively increases as the engine approaches full load and the rotor becomes fully driven by the engine exhaust gases. When the gas drive speed and load equals the rotor needs, the mechanical system reaches a noload condition.
