Shock waves passing through uniform suspensions of droplets or solid particles in a gas upset the velocity and temperature equilibrium between the two phases, and a relaxation zone is created in which the equilibrium is gradually re‐established. The effects of varying the shock strength or the properties of the mixture are investigated theoretically, and it is noted that some flow variables do not always change monotonically throughout the relaxation zone but may go through a maximum or minimum. The behavior of individual variables is discussed in some detail. A particularly interesting finding is that, for weak shock waves, the maximum particle drag and heat transfer may appear at some distance from, rather than immediately behind, the shock front. Project SQUID, Some Properties of Shock Relaxation in Gas Flows Carrying Small Particles.

This review examines existing knowledge on the genesis and flame acceleration of explosions from methane–air mixtures. Explosion phases including deflagration and detonation and the transition from deflagration to detonation have been discussed. The influence of various obstacles and geometries on explosions in an underground mine and duct have been examined. The discussion, presented here, leads the readers to understand the considerations which must be accounted for in order to obviate and/or mitigate any accidental explosion originating from methane–air systems.

A review on understanding explosions from methane-air mixture

Recent theoretical advances in premixed gas combustion are reviewed. The attention is focused on (1) self-acceleration of outward propagating wrinkled flames sustained by the intrinsic flame instability, (2) fragmentation of near-limit cellular flames and formation of self-drifting flame balls, (3) flame acceleration and extinction by large-scale turbulence, (4) multiplicity of detonation regimes in hydraulically resisted flows and the phenomenon of shock-free pressure-driven combustion, and (5) hydraulic resistance as a mechanisms of deflagration-to-detonation transition.
