Carbon nanotube–polymer composites: Chemistry, processing, mechanical and electrical properties

We present the science and technology roadmap for graphene, related two-dimensional crystals, and hybrid systems, targeting an evolution in technology, that might lead to impacts and benefits reaching into most areas of society. This roadmap was developed within the framework of the European Graphene Flagship and outlines the main targets and research areas as best understood at the start of this ambitious project. We provide an overview of the key aspects of graphene and related materials (GRMs), ranging from fundamental research challenges to a variety of applications in a large number of sectors, highlighting the steps necessary to take GRMs from a state of raw potential to a point where they might revolutionize multiple industries. We also define an extensive list of acronyms in an effort to standardize the nomenclature in this emerging field.

Science and technology roadmap for graphene, related two-dimensional crystals, and hybrid systems

A carbon nanotube polymer material was used to form a piezoresistive strain sensor for structural health monitoring applications. The polymer improves the interfacial bonding between the nanotubes. Previous single walled carbon nanotube buckypaper sensors produced distorted strain measurements because the van der Waals attraction force allowed axial slipping of the smooth surfaces of the nanotubes. The polymer sensor uses larger multi-walled carbon nanotubes which improve the strain transfer, repeatability and linearity of the sensor. An electrical model of the nanotube strain sensor was derived based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and strain testing. The model is useful for designing nanotube sensor systems. A biomimetic artificial neuron was developed by extending the length of the sensor. The neuron is a long continuous strain sensor that has a low cost, is simple to install and is lightweight. The neuron has a low bandwidth and adequate strain sensitivity. The neuron sensor is particularly useful for detecting large strains and cracking, and can reduce the number of channels of data acquisition needed for the health monitoring of large structures.

A carbon nanotube strain sensor for structural health monitoring

Nanofilled polymeric matrices have demonstrated remarkable mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. In this article we review the processing of carbon nanotube, graphene, and clay montmorillonite platelet as potential nanofillers to form nanocomposites. The various functionalization techniques of modifying the nanofillers to enable interaction with polymers are summarized. The importance of filler dispersion in the polymeric matrix is highlighted. Finally, the challenges and future outlook for nanofilled polymeric composites are presented.

Polymer nanocomposites-A comparison between carbon nanotubes, graphene, and clay as nanofillers

Instrumented indentation testing was used to evaluate the changes in mechanical properties of single-walled carbon nanotube composite specimens with varying weight percentage (0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 wt%) of nanotubes using a low-viscosity liquid epoxy resin. The nanotubes were prepared using laser ablation technique. Reference tensile tests were also performed on the same samples, and relevant comparisons with indentation results were made. The variations in modulus and hardness obtained using nanoindentation (considering time effects) showed quantifiable differences between the various composite specimens, but differed from tensile test data. The small changes in the observed stiffness and breaking strength of carbon nanotube composites was due to the formation of bundles, their curvy morphology, and microporosity in the specimens. Interesting fluctuations obtained from the interpreted values of modulus with depth of indentation is attributed to varying degrees of the local confining effect of nanotube bundles. Creep exponents for these nanocomposites were also evaluated and indicate considerable improvements.

Nanoindentation testing for evaluating modulus and hardness of single-walled carbon nanotube–reinforced epoxy composites

The improvement in mechanical properties of blended nanocomposites prepared using a low-viscosity, liquid epoxy resin and purified single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was evaluated. The macroscopic tensile stress–strain behavior for hybrid materials made with varying amounts of SWCNT was determined and showed little improvement in the breaking tensile strength. The corresponding variations in modulus and hardness were obtained using nanoindentation considering time effects and showed quantifiable but modest improvements. The small changes in the observed stiffness and breaking strength of carbon nanotube composites is due to the formation of bundles and their curvy morphology.
