The coefficients of the piezospectroscopic tensor for a 0.05 wt% ruby are evaluated by direct measurement of the frequency shift for uniaxial compression along the three principal crystallographic directions and for loading in the three principal shear directions. Although the numerical value of the trace of the tensor is the same as previously reported, the piezospectroscopic coefficients along the c and m directions are slightly different. Contrary to expectation from the rotational symmetry of sapphire about the c axis, the coefficient along the a direction was found to be different from that along the m direction. It also varies nonlinearly with strain in the a direction. The difference is attributed to the applied stress breaking the rotational symmetry about the c axis and is interpreted in terms of the relative motion of the Cr 3+ ion with respect to the nearest-neighbor oxygen ions. An additional finding is that there is a significant difference in the piezospectroscopic tensor for the RI and R2 lines. This will facilitate a more complete determination of the stress tensor from fluorescence measurements than has hitherto been possible

Determination of the Piezospectroscopic Coefficients for Chromium‐Doped Sapphire

During the past several years, considerable study of the Iosipescu shear test method has been conducted by a number of investigators, including the present authors. Several different test fixture designs have been developed, and variations of the specimen size and notch configuration have been considered. Materials with properties ranging from isotropic to highly orthotropic have been tested. The response of such materials has also been predicted using finite element techniques, and attempts have been made to correlate these predictions with available experimental data. This recent work is summarized here, with particular emphasis being given to the correlations and contradictions resulting from the published works of these various investigators.

Current status of the Iosipescu shear test method

A detailed evaluation of the suitability of the Iosipescu specimen tested in the modified Wyoming fixture is presented. A linear finite element model of the specimen is used to assess the uniformity of the shear stress field in the vicinity of the notch, and demonstrate the effect of the nonuniform stress field upon strain gage measurements used for the determination of composite shear moduli. Based upon test results from graphite epoxy laminates, the proximity of the load introduction point to the test section and the material orthotropy greatly influence the individual gage readings, however, shear modu lus determination is not significantly affected by the lack of pure shear. Correction factors are needed to allow for the nonuniformity of the strain field and the use of the average shear stress in the shear modulus evaluation. The correction factors are determined for the region occupied by the strain gage rosette. A comparison of the strain gage readings from one surface of a specimen with corresponding data from moire interferometry on the opposite face documented an extreme sensitivity of some fiber orientations to eccentric loading which induced twisting and spurious shear stress-strain curves. The discovery of specimen twisting explains the apparently inconsistent shear property data found in the literature. Recommendations for improving the reliability and accuracy of the shear modu lus values are made, and the implications for shear strength measurement discussed.

An Evaluation of the Iosipescu Specimen for Composite Materials Shear Property Measurement. Ph.D. Thesis

A detailed evaluation of the suitability of the Iosipescu specimen tested in the modified Wyoming fixture is presented. An experimental investigation using conventional strain gage instrumentation and moire interferometry is performed. A finite element analysis of the Iosipescu shear test for unidirectional and cross-ply composites is used to assess the uniformity of the shear stress field in the vicinity of the notch, and demonstrate the effect of the nonuniform stress field upon the strain gage measurements used for the determination of composite shear moduli. From the test results for graphite-epoxy laminates, it is shown that the proximity of the load introduction point to the test section greatly influences the individual gage readings for certain fiber orientations but the effect upon shear modulus measurement is relatively unimportant. A numerical study of the load contact effect shows the sensitivity of some fiber configurations to the specimen/fixture contact mechanism and may account for the variations in the measured shear moduli. A comparison of the strain gage readings from one surface of a specimen with corresponding data from moire interferometry on the opposite face documented an extreme sensitivity of some fiber orientations to eccentric loading which induced twisting and yielded spurious shear stress-strain curves. In the numerical analysis, it is shown that the Iosipescu specimens for different fiber orientations have to be modeled differently in order to closely approximate the true loading conditions. Correction factors are needed to allow for the nonuniformity of the strain field and the use of the average shear stress in the shear modulus evaluation. The correction factors, which are determined for the region occupied by the strain gage rosette, are found to be dependent upon the material orthotropic ratio and the finite element models. Based upon the experimental and numerical results, recommendations for improving the reliability and accuracy of the shear modulus values are made, and the implications for shear strength measurement discussed. Further application of the Iosipescu shear test to woven fabric composites is presented. The limitations of the traditional strain gage instrumentation on the satin weave and high tow plain weave fabrics is discussed. Test results of a epoxy based aluminum particulate composite is also presented. A modification of the Iosipescu specimen is proposed and investigated experimentally and numerically. It is shown that the proposed new specimen design provides a more uniform shear stress field in the test section and greatly reduces the normal and shear stress concentrations in the vicinity of the notches. While the fabrication and the material cost of the proposed specimen is tremendously reduced, it is shown the accuracy of the shear modulus measurement is not sacrificed.

An Evaluation of the Iosipescu Specimen for Composite Materials Shear Property Measurement

The use of losipescu specimens for the determination of the shear properties of a vinyl-ester resin was investigated. The antisymmetric four-point bend and the Adams and Walrath fixtures were studied for their suitability in loading these specimens. Photoelastic and strain-gage data in addition to published finite-element results show that the latter fixture distorts the stress field in the gage section. The antisymmetric four-point bend fixture is found to give the purest shear-stress field in the gage section and to yield the most reliable shear-modulus values. A refined photoelastic analysis shows that the shear-stress distribution between the notch roots is essentially uniform with a relative maximum or minimum at the centroid depending on the depths of the notches. Also, stress risers of up to 30 percent are observed near the notch roots. Except at the roots, finite-element predictions are presented which are in excellent agreement with photoelastic data. The failure mode of this vinyl-ester resin is tensile and the corresponding tensile stress calculated from the average shear stress in the gage section of the losipescu specimen is in excellent agreement with failure data acquired in tension.
