A review of recent design procedures for water networks in refineries and process plants

This paper introduces the global mixed-integer quadratic optimizer, GloMIQO, a numerical solver addressing mixed-integer quadratically-constrained quadratic programs to $${\varepsilon}$$ -global optimality. The algorithmic components are presented for: reformulating user input, detecting special structure including convexity and edge-concavity, generating tight convex relaxations, partitioning the search space, bounding the variables, and finding good feasible solutions. To demonstrate the capacity of GloMIQO, we extensively tested its performance on a test suite of 399 problems of diverse size and structure. The test cases are taken from process networks applications, computational geometry problems, GLOBALLib, MINLPLib, and the Bonmin test set. We compare the performance of GloMIQO with respect to four state-of-the-art global optimization solvers: BARON 10.1.2, Couenne 0.4, LindoGLOBAL 6.1.1.588, and SCIP 2.1.0.

GloMIQO: Global mixed-integer quadratic optimizer

The designing of heat exchanger networks (HENs), mass exchanger networks (MENs), and water networks (WNs) is a major topic of process system engineering. The WN problem is most recent, and although the seminal work was published in 1980, the real development should be dated from 1994. Increasing public concern on scarce water resources, together with stringent regulations on wastewater discharge, has caused a great number of publications in recent years. Despite noticeable achievements in the topic, there is still a need for robust flexible approaches that will find wider application in practice. Review of Water Network Design Methods with Literature Annotations

We propose a general superstructure and a model for the global optimization for integrated process water networks. The superstructure consists of multiple sources of water, water-using processes, wastewater treatment, and pre-treatment operations. Unique features are that all feasible interconnections are considered between them and multiple sources of water can be used. The proposed model is formulated as a nonlinear programing (NLP) and as a mixed integer nonlinear programing (MINLP) problem for the case when 0–1 variables are included for the cost of piping and to establish optimal trade-offs between cost and network complexity. To effectively solve the NLP and MINLP models to global optimality we propose tight bounds on the variables, which are expressed as general equations. We also incorporate the cut proposed by Karuppiah and Grossmann to significantly improve the strength of the lower bound for the global optimum. Global superstructure optimization for the design of integrated process water networks

This paper deals with the optimum design of a distributed wastewater network where multicomponent streams are considered that are to be processed by units for reducing the concentration of several contaminants. The proposed model gives rise to a nonconvex nonlinear problem which often exhibits local minima and causes convergence difficulties. A search procedure is proposed in this paper that is based on the successive solution of a relaxed linear model and the original nonconvex nonlinear problem. Several examples are presented to illustrate that the proposed method often yields global or near global optimum solutions. The model is also extended for selecting different treatment technologies and for handling membrane separation modules.
