In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey on applications of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) for pattern recognition. Since SVMs show good generalization performance on many real-life data and the approach is properly motivated theoretically, it has been applied to wide range of applications. This paper describes a brief introduction of SVMs and summarizes its numerous applications.

Applications of Support Vector Machines for Pattern Recognition: A Survey

This work implements an enhanced hybrid classification method through the utilization of the naive Bayes approach and the support vector machine (SVM). In this project, the Bayes formula was used to vectorize (as opposed to classify) a document according to a probability distribution reflecting the probable categories that the document may belong to. The Bayes formula gives a range of probabilities to which the document can be assigned according to a predetermined set of topics (categories) such as those found in the "20 Newsgroups" data set for instance. Using this probability distribution as the vectors to represent the document, the SVM can then be used to classify the documents on a multidimensional level. The effects of an inadvertent dimensionality reduction caused by classifying using only the highest probability using the naive Bayes classifier can be overcome using the SVM by employing all the probability values associated with every category for each document. This method can be used for any data set and shows a significant reduction in training time as compared to the Lsquare method and significant improvement in the classification accuracy when compared to pure naive Bayes systems and also the TF-IDF/SVM hybrids.

A survey on pattern recognition applications of support vector machines

Securing the exchange of intellectual property and providing protection to multimedia contents in distribution systems have enabled the advent of digital rights management (DRM) systems. User authentication, a key component of any DRM system, ensures that only those with specific rights are able to access the digital information. It is here that biometrics play an essential role. It reinforces security at all stages where customer authentication is needed. Biometric recognition, as a means of personal authentication, is an emerging signal processing area focused on increasing security and convenience of use in applications where users need to be securely identified. In this article, we outline the state-of-the-art of several popular biometric modalities and technologies and provide specific applications where biometric recognition may be beneficially incorporated. In addition, the article also discussed integration strategies of biometric authentication technologies into DRM systems that satisfy the needs and requirements of consumers, content providers, and payment brokers, securing delivery channels and contents.

Authentication gets personal with biometrics

The definition of parameters is a crucial step in the development of a system for identifying emotions in speech. Although there is no agreement on which are the best features for this task, it is generally accepted that prosody carries most of the emotional information. Most works in the field use some kind of prosodic features, often in combination with spectral and voice quality parametrizations. Nevertheless, no systematic study has been done comparing these features. This paper presents the analysis of the characteristics of features derived from prosody, spectral envelope, and voice quality as well as their capability to discriminate emotions. In addition, early fusion and late fusion techniques for combining different information sources are evaluated. The results of this analysis are validated with experimental automatic emotion identification tests. Results suggest that spectral envelope features outperform the prosodic ones. Even when different parametrizations are combined, the late fusion of long-term spectral statistics with short-term spectral envelope parameters provides an accuracy comparable to that obtained when all parametrizations are combined.

Feature Analysis and Evaluation for Automatic Emotion Identification in Speech

The contribution of this paper is twofold: (1) to formulate a decision fusion problem that is encountered in the design of a multi-modal identity verification system as a particular classification problem, and (2) to solve this problem by using a support vector machine (SVM). The multi-modal identity verification system under consideration is built of d modalities in parallel, each one delivering as output a scalar number, called a score, stating how well the claimed identity is verified. A fusion module receiving the d scores as input has to take a binary decision: to accept or reject the identity. This fusion problem has been solved using SVMs. The performance of this fusion module has been evaluated and compared with other proposed methods on a multi-modal database containing both vocal and visual modalities.
