The polar-orbiting DE 1 spacecraft has provided the first measurements of high-latitude auroral phenomena. Three types of plasma-wave emissions were observed: auroral hiss, Z-mode radiation, and auroral kilometric radiation. Whistler mode auroral hiss emissions were observed on virtually every pass over the auroral zone. The shape of the auroral hiss frequency-time spectrum is explained by a whistler mode propagation effect if the radiation is emitted from a spatially localized source below the spacecraft. Broadband Z emissions have been observed in the low-density region over the auroral zone and polar cap. The auroral hiss may be distinguished from the Z-mode radiation by the sharp upper cutoff of the whistler mode at the local electron plasma frequency. Auroral kilometric radiation usually occurs at frequencies above electron gyrofrequency, indicating that this radiation is propagating in the free-space R-X mode.

Auroral hiss, Z-mode radiation and auroral kilometric radiation in the polar magnetosphere: DE-1 observations

We present Wind spacecraft observations of solar impulsive electron events associated with locally generated Langmuir waves during solar type III radio bursts. The solar impulsive electrons had energies from ~600 eV to greater than 300 keV. Local Langmuir emissions associated with these fluxes generally coincided with the arrival of 2-12 keV electrons. A survey of 27 events over 1 yr shows that there were few occurrences of electron distributions (~96 s averaged) that were unstable to Langmuir waves and none that had a substantial growth rate (>3 × 10-2 s-1) or endured for more than 96 s. Intense solar impulsive electron events that occurred on 1995 April 2 are studied in detail. Marginally stable (plateaued) distributions occasionally coincided with a periods of local Langmuir emissions, but the electron distributions were otherwise stable. These observations suggest that kinetic processes were modifying the electron distribution but also suggest that processes other than one-dimensional quasilinear relaxation were involved. We find that solar impulsive electron distributions were often unstable to oblique waves, such as quasi-electrostatic whistler waves or electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves, suggesting that competition between Langmuir and oblique emissions may be important. There are several other features in the Wind spacecraft solar impulsive electron observations that are noteworthy. Nondispersive flux modulations were visible in many of the events (also visible in the published ISEE 3 data) in ~1-4 keV electrons, suggesting that a local hydromagnetic instability may have accompanied the lowest energy solar impulsive electron fluxes. The Wind data differ from the ISEE 3 data in the energy spectra of the electron events. ISEE 3 recorded few events with only high-energy (>10 keV) electron fluxes, whereas a survey of the Wind events shows a substantially higher ratio of high-energy events. The high-energy events were often associated with solar flares that could not have been magnetically well connected with the satellite.

Wind Spacecraft Observations of Solar Impulsive Electron Events Associated with Solar Type III Radio Bursts

The Earth's auroral electrons produce copious non-thermal radio emissions of various types, including auroral kilometric radiation (AKR), whistler mode auroral hiss, mode conversion radiation such as auroral roar and MF-burst, and possibly HF/VHF emissions. In some cases, mechanisms have been identified and quantitatively described, whereby the energy of the auroral electrons is converted into electromagnetic radiation. In many other cases, the radiation mechanism, or the relative significance of several possible mechanisms, remains uncertain. This review covers fairly comprehensively experimental and theoretical research on types of auroral radiation other than AKR, concentrating on emissions with frequency higher than about 1 kHz and treating only emissions which are unique to the auroral zone. The review covers both ground-based and in-situ observations. It covers a wide range of theoretical approaches, emphasizing those which at present appear most important for producing non-AKR auroral radiations.

Auroral radio emissions, 1. Hisses, roars, and bursts

The self-consistent electron kinetics of Alfven waves on the electron inertial scale is studied using a 2D hybrid-kinetic description. The ions follow a fluid description for Alfven waves at frequencies below the ion cyclotron frequency. The parallel electron dynamics is treated kinetically using particle-in-cell techniques. In this model, the electron plasma mode is eliminated, and only the physics of the Alfven waves is retained. At sufficiently large amplitudes, it is found that oblique Alfven waves break due to finite electron inertia in a cold plasma. The consequence of wave breaking is the formation of an electron beam which can be unstable to the beam-plasma instability. The electrons supporting the parallel current thermalize into a non-Maxwellian distribution with an energetic tail up to several keV, assuming a reasonable magnetospheric Alfven speed. In hot plasma simulations, electron trapping is the principal mechanism of electron acceleration. It is proposed that wave breaking or electron trapping of oblique Alfven waves at 1 R(E) can result in electron acceleration and may explain some observed auroral phenomena.

Electron acceleration by Alfvén waves in the magnetosphere

A height dependent model of the auroral beam and ionosphere is used to investigate the electrostatic noise generated by the auroral beam. The beam pitch angle is assumed to evolve with the first adiabatic invariant conserved. The beam generates whistler noise over most of the field line and upper hybrid noise only at low altitudes. Only a very narrow range of beam source densities generates noise without producing such large power fluxes that nonlinear effects are important. The strongest power fluxes in the auroral arc are likely to occur in the altitude range of a few thousand kilometers.

Altitude dependent model of the auroral beam and beam-generated electrostatic noise

During a rocket flight over an active aurora, electron velocity distribution is studied in the 15-25 keV range. The results are then compared to optical observations made by all-sky cameras and a television system. A broad plateau produced by downcoming electrons was observed. Smaller plateaus were seen when the rocket was south of arcs evident in all-sky camera photographs. By extending to higher energies when the rocket passed out of auroral forms, the plateaus appeared to broaden. When the rocket left an arc or entered weak diffuse auroral structures, the plateaus shrank as the more energetic portions faded. When field-aligned rays were observed within the arcs, the plateau's high-velocity cutoff was found to fluctuate. The results indicate that the auroral plasma was very unstable above the rocket. It is suggested that plateaus are produced as an unstable plasma evolves toward a quasi-equilibrium state.

Auroral electron distribution function

Experimental measurements of the electron distribution function are used to study the stability of plasma in the auroral ionosphere. Measurements were taken at altitudes of 200–250 km and cover the 25-eV to 15-keV energy range. The observed plasma is shown to be stable to electrostatic waves that propagate exactly parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field. The measured distribution function has a secondary peak, but this peak is either too small or too limited in extent to drive parallel or perpendicular instabilities. A preliminary study of oblique electrostatic waves during one time interval indicates that the upper hybrid mode is stable for all propagation directions at the rocket location but becomes weakly unstable several hundred kilometers higher where the background plasma density drops below 3 × 104 el/cm³.
