Simple reaction time of hands and feet was studied in normal subjects (47 males, and 17 females) to visual and auditory stimuli using an electric circuit and recording points of stimulus and action on a fast moving kymograph. There are significant differences between reaction times of hands and feet, right side and left side, males and females and between auditory and visual reaction times (ART and VRT). Both VRT and ART were significantly faster in hands. Delayed response of left side (LH and LF), was more marked in feet with ART. On crossing hands, both VRT and ART took more time in RH. Males responded faster than females, difference being significant mainly in ART and that too on left side. ART was slightly faster than VRT. Faster response of right side was probably due to the fact that all the subjects were right handed persons.

Comparative study of visual and auditory reaction time of hands and feet in males and females.

The influence of one-sided limb dominance on the muscles, bones and motor conduction velocity of median nerve has been investigated and reported. We have undertaken a more detailed study of the conduction velocity of the efferent fibres of median and ulnar nerves of both sides in 25 right-handed and an equal number of left-handed subjects of both sexes in the age group of 18-30 years. A significant correlation between "handedness" and motor nerve conduction especially in median nerve, is shown by the results in both right handers and left handers.

Limb dominance and motor conduction velocity of median and ulnar nerves.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a systemic disease that affects the breathing mechanism and decreases the functional capacity in anemic COPD patients. The aim of this study was to compare six minute walk distance (6 MWD) and reaction time between anemic and non-anemic COPD patients. 16 patients with anemic COPD, and 16 non-anemic COPD patients were included in the study. The average hemoglobin levels of the male were 12.10±0.57 and 14.70±0.96 g/dL in anemic and non-anemic COPD patients, respectively. The average hemoglobin level of females were 11.60±0.57 and 13.90±0.63 g/dL in anemic and non-anemic COPD patients, respectively. The result showed that the 6 MWD in anemic COPD had significant shorter distances than non-anemic COPD (p<0.05). Reaction time had not significant difference between non-anemic COPD patients and anemic COPD patients. This study suggests that anemic COPD patients have decreased ability to exercise in comparison to non-anemic COPD patients.

Introduction: Normative data of Nerve conduction study (NCS) are used to evaluate Nerve conduction study of patients presenting with signs and symptoms of peripheral nerve disease. The Nerve conduction velocity depends on age, gender, temperature and nerve diameter. The study was done to observe the effect of the cerebral dominance if any on the motor nerve conduction velocity by recording nerve conduction velocity of both right and left sides in upper limb. Material and Methods: The nerve conduction study was done on 100 medical students (50 male and 50 female) studying in Adesh Institute of Medical Science sand Research, Bathinda. Motor nerve conduction for Median nerve was done using computerized software Octopus EMG/NCV/EP. Amplitude, duration and conduction velocity of Median Nerve were measured for both the upper limbs. Results: Motor nerve conduction velocity of Median Nerve was found to be greater in right limb (56.87 ± 3.6 m/s and 57.5 ± 3.35 m/s) as compared to left limb (56.33 ± 3.53 m/s and 56.97 ± 3.48 m/s) in both male and female students but the results were statistically non-significant (p>0.05). The latency of median nerve conduction was less in females (2.65± 0.24 ms and 2.75± 0.32 m/s) than in males (2.71± 0.27ms and 2.78± 0.32 m/s) on both sides. Conclusion: Motor nerve conduction velocity was found to be greater in right limb as compared to left limb in both males and females Motor nerve conduction velocity was found to be more in female students as compared to male students.

Comparison of Motor Nerve Conduction in Upper Limbs of Young Healthy Male and Female Medical Students in Bathinda District - An Institutional Study

Background and Objectives: In the past few decades, major changes have taken place in the field of peripheral nerve studies especially in the relation to its ultrastructure, histochemistry, neurophysiology and axonal transport system. Wide spread interest in disorders of peripheral nervous system, which has emerged in recent years and introduction of various new investigating techniques like nerve conduction studies. The objective of present study was to assess the relation of body mass index to median nerve conduction velocity in right and left handed subjects.
Methods: Hundred healthy individuals (50 right handed and 50 left handed) in the age group of 18-24 years were included in the study. The body weight of the subjects was measured using a pedestal type of weighing scale with a maximum capacity of 150 kg. The body weight was considered to the nearest of 0.1 kg. Height without footwear was measured using a vertical scale (Avery, India) with an accuracy 0.5 cm and was rounded to the nearest 0.01 m. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated from Height and weight. Median nerve conduction velocity was measured using Computerized Nerve Conduction Velocity Equipment (NeurocareTM-2000 manufactured by BiotechTM), Mumbai, India.
Result: The mean age of the right handed subjects was 22.28 ± 1.97 and 22.7 ± 1.66 in left handed subjects involved in the study. The mean height of right handed subjects was 160 ± 11.54 and 161.92 ± 13.03 in left handed subjects. Mean weight of right handed subjects was 57.76 ± 12.02 and 60.66 ± 15.69 in left handed subjects. Mean body mass index of right handed subjects was 23.36 ± 4.23 and 22.54 ± 4.32 in left handed subjects. Relation of conduction velocity of peripheral nerves to body mass index in right handed and left handed subjects

The conduction velocity in the efferent fibres of the median nerve has been compared in the right and left forelimbs of 38 human subjects. Six independent estimates were made for each limb. Estimates on the right and left limb of a subject were made at the same sitting. Conduction velocity was faster on the right side in the majority of right handed subjects; and on the left side in the majority of left handed subjects. The mean conduction velocity was greater on the right side in right handed subjects (P less than 0.02).
