Context: Model-driven code generation is being increasingly applied to enhance software development from perspectives of maintainability, extensibility and reusability. However, aspect-oriented code generation from models is an area that is currently underdeveloped. Objective: In this study we provide a survey of existing research on aspect-oriented modeling and code generation to discover current work and identify needs for future research. Method: A systematic mapping study was performed to find relevant studies. Classification schemes have been defined and the 65 selected primary studies have been classified on the basis of research focus, contribution type and research type. Results: The papers of solution proposal research type are in a majority. All together aspect-oriented modeling appears being the most focused area divided into modeling notations and process (36%) and model composition and interaction management (26%). The majority of contributions are methods. Conclusion: Aspect-oriented modeling and composition mechanisms have been significantly discussed in existing literature while more research is needed in the area of model-driven code generation. Furthermore, we have observed that previous research has frequently focused on proposing solutions and thus there is need for research that validates and evaluates the existing proposals in order to provide firm foundations for aspect-oriented model-driven code generation.

Aspect-oriented model-driven code generation: A systematic mapping study

The meaning of the term automation is reviewed through its definition and related definitions, historical evolution, technological progress, benefits and risks, and domains and levels of applications. A survey of 331 people around the world adds insights to the current meaning of automation to people, with regard to: What is your definition of automation? Where did you encounter automation first in your life? and What is the most important contribution of automation to society? The survey respondents include 12 main aspects of the definition in their responses; 62 main types of first automation encounter; and 37 types of impacts, mostly benefits but also two benefit–risks combinations: replacing humans, and humansʼ inability to complete tasks by themselves. The most exciting contribution of automation found in the survey was to encourage/inspire creative work; inspire newer solutions. Minor variations were found in different regions of the world. Responses about the first automation encounter are somewhat related to the age of the respondent, e.g., pneumatic versus digital control, and to urban versus farming childhood environment. The chapter concludes with several emerging trends in bioinspired automation, collaborative control and automation, and risks to anticipate and eliminate.

Automation: What It Means to Us Around the World

Recent developments in information and communication technologies have helped to accelerate the diffusion of electronic services in the medical industry. Health information services house, retrieve, and make use of medical information to improve service quality and reduce cost. Usersâ€”including medical staff, administrative staff, and patientsâ€”of these systems cannot fully benefit from them unless they can use them comfortably. User behavior is affected by various factors relating to technology characteristics, user characteristics, social environment, and organizational environment. Our research evaluated the determinants of health information service adoption and analyzed the relationship between these determinants and the behavior of the user. Health information service adoption was found to be influenced by service characteristics, user characteristics, intermediary variables, facilitating conditions, and social factors.

Exploring the Adoption of Technology Driven Services in the Healthcare Industry

This paper motivates the blend of social computing with service-oriented computing, giving “birth” to social Web services. On the one hand, social computing builds user applications upon the principles of collective action and content sharing. On the other hand, service-oriented computing builds enterprise applications upon the principles of service offer and demand and loose coupling. Thanks to this blend social Web services can operate taking into account with whom they worked in the past and with whom they would like to work in the future. To engineer social Web services, this paper presents a four-step method that addresses several questions related to the engineering exercise. These questions are what relationships exist between Web services, what social networks correspond to these relationships, how to build social networks of Web services, and what social behaviors can Web services exhibit. Experiences dealing with implementing social Web services are, also, reported in the paper.

Towards a Method for Engineering Social Web Services

The purpose of this study is to define generic service processes, their system, and a scope of service science developed originally by the author. In the presented approach, the main criterion is the class of serviced users, since this leads to the six kinds of process recognition and eventually helps in planning e-service systemsâ€™ architecture. E-service system (e-SS) is defined as a mission-goal-strategy-driven configuration of technology, organizational processes and networks designed to deliver HTservicesTH that satisfy the needs, wants, or aspirations of customers. Marketing, operations, and global environment considerations have significant implications for the design of an e-service system. Four criteria which impact e-service systemsâ€™ architecture have been defined as: service business model, customer contact and level of involvement (Service User Interface), service providerâ€™s enterprise complexity (Enterprise Systems and Networks), and scope of goods involved in service. It was proved that the e-service system is the intermediary layer between Service User Interface and Enterprise Systems and Networks. Two examples of e-SS have been modeled.

The Architecture of Service Systems as the Framework for the Definition of Service Science Scope

Summary only given. In this presentation we argue that a business value chain model drives the identification and modeling of business services, and the business oriented/technology neutral modeling language IDEF0, is used for modeling web services. We expect the next generation of advanced (i.e. intelligent/semantics-based) Web services to be generated and driven directly by business models, rather than laboriously hand-crafted. In our approach, a systemic view of services offers a declarative specification of what are the capabilities that the service delivers.
