Purpose – Rapid innovation and globalization have generated tremendous opportunities and choices in the marketplace for firms and customers. Competitive pressures have led to sourcing and manufacturing on a global scale resulting in a significant increase in products. The paper tries to identify the need for real time business intelligence (BI) in supply chain analytics.Design/methodology/approach – The paper provides argument and analysis of the advantages and hurdles in BI.Findings – The paper focuses on the necessity to revisit the traditional BI concept that integrates and consolidates information in an organization in order to support firms that are service oriented and seeking customer loyalty and retention. Enhancing effectiveness and efficiency of supply chain analytics using a BI approach is a critical component in a company's ability to achieve its competitive advantage.Originality/value – This paper furthers understanding of the issues surrounding the use of BI systems in supply chains.

Real time business intelligence in supply chain analytics

The main objective of this article is to identify the critical success factors (CSFs) for Business Intelligence (BI) systems implementation in small and medium enterprises (SMEs).The structure of the article is subordinated to this objective. The paper identifies the term Business Intelligence, characteristics of Business Intelligence systems, and various perspectives of their development. Then, the existing CSFs of IT projects and BI projects proposed by various authors in literature are reviewed. Next, on the basis of statistical data and literature, the role of SMEs in the economy and the barriers to their development are assessed. The obtained results allowed us to determine that one of the barriers to the SMEs development is the implementation and use of IT. Subsequently, using in-depth interviews with SMEs, the SMEs need for BI systems as well as the determinants and barriers to their implementation are recognized. Based on the findings, using critical thinking and inductive reasoning, the authors of the article along with the researched enterprises have defined CSFs that are crucial for implementing BI systems in SMEs. The results obtained may be useful for managers, policy makers, business analysts, and IT specialists in dealing with planning and implementation of BI systems in SMEs.

Business justification with business intelligence

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to deliver an insight into the interaction effects of process‐oriented management and business intelligence (BI).Design/methodology/approach – The paper takes up publications from the fields of BI and business process management and analyzes the state‐of‐the‐art of process‐centric business intelligence (PCBI). Process‐centric business intelligence

Today, companies wish to evaluate and justify their investments into Business Intelligence systems, which requires measurement of their business value and comparison with similar systems in other companies. Maturity models offer an adequate baseline for comparison. Maturity models define levels of definition, efficiency, manageability and measurement of the monitored environment. This paper briefly describes and analyzes six different maturity models that can be used for the maturity of BI systems assessment. An overview and analysis will show that most of the models do not cover the whole area of Business Intelligence, but they rather focus on a specific point of view and/or area of the problem domain. Results show that by using maturity models, only a short period of time is needed in order for one to discover the areas within the company or institution that need special, more intensive attention and work. Namely, results of the analysis often expose problematic areas that could be easily overlooked.

Overview of Business Intelligence Maturity Models

In today's competitive environment, analysing data to predict market trends and to improve enterprise performance is an essential business activity. However, it is becoming clear that business success requires such data analysis to be carried out in real-time, and that actions in response to analysis results must also be performed in realtime in order to meet the rapid change in demand from customers and regulators alike. This paper discusses issues and problems of current business intelligence systems, and then outlines our vision of future real-time business intelligence. We present a list of emerging technologies that are being developed within the research program of British Telecommunications plc (BT), which could contribute to the realisation of real-time business intelligence, in addition to some examples of applying these technologies to improve BTs systems and services.
