High speed logic gate using two-photon absorption in silicon waveguides

We have developed a theoretical model of an ultra- fast all-optical signal processor based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer with quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifiers in both its arms. It is shown that such a processor under different conditions may realize wavelength conversion, XOR logic operation, and optical 3R regeneration.

Ultrafast All-Optical Processor Based on Quantum-Dot Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers

Optical computation is the most desirable technology that enhances the speed, data transmission rate and processing power by replacing the electronics with the optical switches. Optical switching is efficiently performed in high speed signal processing by all optical gates. This paper reviews the progressive development of the optical switching technology, highlights the different technologies of all optical gates and other switching circuits in all optical processing. Basic gates and other logic circuits in optical computing based on nonlinear regimes using semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), fiber and photonic crystals are discussed, compared and the challenges along with future direction is outlined.

All optical switching and associated technologies: a review

Photonics-based microwave frequency mixing provides distinct features in terms of wide frequency coverage, broad instantaneous bandwidth, small frequency-dependent loss, and immunity to electromagnetic interference as compared with its electronic counterpart, which can be a key technical enabler for future broadband and multifunctional RF systems. Herein, all-optical and optoelectronic microwave frequency mixing techniques are reviewed, with an emphasis on the latest advances in photonics-based microwave frequency mixers with improved performance in terms of conversion efficiency, dynamic range, mixing-spur suppression, mixing functionality, and polarization independence. Innovative applications enabled by photonics-based microwave frequency mixers, such as radio-over-fiber communication systems, radar systems, satellite payloads and electronic warfare systems, are also reviewed. In addition, efforts in implementing integrated photonics-based microwave mixers that lead to a dramatic reduction in size, weight, and power consumption are also reviewed.

The authors present a novel all-optical logic NOR gate using two-cascaded semiconductor optical. amplifiers (SOAs) in a counterpropagating feedback configuration. This configuration accentuates the gain nonlinearity due to the mutual gain modulation of the two SOAs. The all-optical NOR gate feasibility has been demonstrated delivering an extinction ratio higher than 12 dB over a wide range of wavelength.

All-optical logic NOR gate using two-cascaded semiconductor optical amplifiers

We present an experimental and computing analysis of the nonlinear distortions of an all-optical radiofrequency mixer based on cross-gain modulation (XGM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). Such an all-optical mixer is well suited for radio-over-fiber (RoF) applications. The simulation results are based on a SOA model developed under ADS™ software and are compared to experimental results in various cases. The good correlation between experimental and simulation results permits to demonstrate the ability of our SOA model to study mixing phenomenon by using a Harmonic Balance (HB) simulation method. Optical third-order input intercept point (IIP3) and its electrical equivalent are determined experimentally and by simulation with a good concordance. An optical IIP3 of -5 dBm and a spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of 85.7 dB/Hz are obtained for a radiofrequency signal at 1 GHz. Moreover, simulations show that the IIP3 increases, all other parameters being equal, when the SOA active zone is shortened.
