This paper addresses the workload balancing problem in identical parallel machines context. The problem consists of assigning n different jobs to m identical parallel machines in order to minimize the workload imbalance among the different machines. This problem is formulated as a linear mixed integer program to minimize the difference between the greatest and smallest workload assigned to each machine. Based on some numerical examples reported in the literature, we establish that the classical formulation which consists of minimizing the greatest machine completion time does not provide the optimal workload repartition. That is why we consider a new mathematical formulation based on the minimization of the difference between the workload of the bottleneck machine and the workload of the fastest machine. Cost effective machining of hybrid metal matrix composites (HMMC’s) with required surface integrity and without surface flaws is a challenging task for modern industries. This research explores the effect of end milling factors (spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut) and also weight percentage of reinforced materials on the surface integrity (surface roughness and microhardness) and material removal rate during machining of hybrid Al7075/SiC/Gr composites. Response surface methodology (RSM) is selected for experimental design and experimental results are analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Further, multi-objective optimization is carried out using composite desirability function. In addition, the morphology of the milled surfaces is examined for defining the flaws that affect quality of the milled surfaces. The experimental results reveal that apart from spindle speed and feed rate, the weight percentage of reinforced materials significantly affects the surface integrity of hybrid Al7075/SiC/Gr composites. The obtained optimum levels of the factors are spindle speed at 1000 rpm, feed rate at 0.0677 mm/rev, depth of cut at 1.1869 mm, and weight percentage of reinforced materials at 12.6970% that produce optimal values of the considered responses i.e. material removal rate up to 2043 mm3/min, roughness up to 1.29 μm and microhardness up to 142.36 μH.

A study on Burr formation mechanism

This paper addresses the loading problem in flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs). The problem involves the assignment of the operation or jobs to the identical parallel machine to process required part types that have been selected to be produced simultaneously. A genetic algorithm (GA) based heuristic approach is proposed in this paper for minimizing the imbalance of workload among the identical parallel machines. The program is coded in MATLAB and conducted the trials on compatible IBM/PC. Computational results are presented in appendix and compared for different test problems to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the suggested procedure.

Ant Colony Optimization is a new meta-heuristic technique used for solving different combinatorial optimization problems. ACO is based on the behaviors of ant colony and this method has strong robustness as well as good distributed calculative mechanism. ACO has very good search capability for optimization problems. Travelling salesman problem is one of the most famous combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper we applied the ant colony optimization technique for symmetric travelling salesperson problem. Analysis are shown that the ant select the rich pheromone distribution edge for finding out the best path.
