The temporal evolution of the optical spectra of various types of supernovae (SNe) is illustrated, in part to aid observers classifying supernova candidates. Type II SNe are defined by the presence of hydrogen, and they exhibit a very wide variety of photometric and spectroscopic properties. Among hydrogen-deficient SNe (Type I), three subclasses are now known: those whose early-time spectra show strong Si II (Ia), prominent He I (Ib), or neither Si II nor He I (Ic). The late-time spectra of SNe Ia consist of a multitude of blended emission lines of iron-group elements; in sharp contrast, those of SNe Ib and SNe Ic (which are similar to each other) are dominated by several relatively unblended lines of intermediatemass elements. Although SNe Ia, which result from the thermonuclear runaway of white dwarfs, constitute a rather homogeneous subclass, important variations in their photometric and spectroscopic properties are undeniably present. SNe Ib/Ic probably result from core collapse in massive stars largely stripped of their hydrogen (Ib) and helium (Ic) envelopes, and hence they are physically related to SNe II. Indeed, the progenitors of some SNe II seem to have only a low-mass skin of hydrogen; their spectra gradually evolve to resemble those of SNe Ib. In addition to the two well-known photometric subclasses (linear and plateau) of SNe II, which may exhibit minor spectroscopic differences, there is a new subclass (SNe IIn) distinguished by relatively narrow emission lines with little or no P Cygni absorption component and slowly declining light curves. These objects probably have unusually dense circumstellar gas with which the ejecta interact.

▪ Abstract Distant type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) appear fainter than their local counterparts. Independent of what explanation will eventually be found to be correct, this implies a significant change in how we see the distant universe and what we understand of these stellar explosions. The observational characteristics of nearby SNe Ia show some differences from event to event. Despite their considerable range in observed peak luminosity, they can be normalized by their light-curve shape. Through this normalization, SNe Ia can be used as exquisite distance indicators. The Hubble diagram of nearby SNe Ia, demonstrating the linear cosmic expansion at small scales, is the simplest observational proof for the standard character of these objects. Compared with Friedmann models of the universe, the distant SNe are too faint even for a freely coasting, “empty” universe, barring other influences that could dim the events. Cosmological implications from observations of type ia supernovae

We present UBVRI light curves for the bright Type Ia supernovae SN 1990N in NGC 4639 and SN 1991T in NGC 4527, based on photometry gathered in the course of the Calan/Tololo supernova program. Both objects have well-sampled light curves starting several days before maximum light and spanning well through the exponential tail. These data supersede the preliminary photometry published by Leibundgut et al. and Phillips et al. The host galaxies for these supernovae have (or will have) accurate distances based on the Cepheid period-luminosity relationship. The photometric data in this paper provide template curves for the study of the general population of Type Ia supernovae and accurate photometric indices, needed for the Cepheid-supernova distance scale.

Optical light curves of the type Ia supernovae SN 1990N and SN 1991T

Type Ia supernova light curves are characterized by a rapid rise from zero luminosity to a peak value, followed by a slower quasi-exponential decline. The rise and peak last for a few days, while the decline persists for many months. It is widely believed that the decline is powered by the radioactive decay chain 56Ni → 56Co → 56Fe, but the rates of decline in luminosity do not exactly match the decay rates of Ni and Co. In 1976, Rust, Leventhal, and McCall [19] presented evidence that the declining part of the light curve is well modelled by a linear combination of two exponentials whose decay rates were proportional to, but not exactly equal to, the decay rates for Ni and Co. The proposed reason for the lack of agreement between the rates was that the radioactive decays take place in the interior of a white dwarf star, at densities much higher than any encountered in a terrestrial environment, and that these higher densities accelerate the two decays by the same factor. This paper revisits this model, demonstrating that a variant of it provides excellent fits to observed luminosity data from 6 supernovae.

Exponential Data Fitting and Its Applications

Dedicated SN searches started over 100 years ago. Over that time, astronomers have collected large sets of observational data. They have developed detailed classification and achieved general agreement on the nature of these events. Nevertheless, a lot of questions remain unanswered. In short, most Type II SNe (hydrogen-rich SNe) are terminal explosions of red supergiant (RSG) stars. The main source of knowledge about these objects are the way their luminosity changes with time (`light curves') and how their radiation is distributed in wavelength. One of the widely used methods to extract the information from the observational data is computer modelling. The largest part of our work lays in the numerical simulations. In Chapter 1 (Introduction), we present succinctly the necessary theory which includes stellar evolution, explosion physics and ejecta evolution. We discuss different types of SNe; the modern knowledge on CCSNe and its problems. We discuss stellar evolution theory. We describe the nucleosynthesis that takes place in the cores of massive stars and gives rise to their final chemical stratification. We describe our numerical approach in Chapter 2 (Supernova modelling). It includes three major steps: stellar evolution modelling, explosion of the resulting RSG star, and ejecta evolution modelling. We present modelled structure of RSG stars; these models and computational techniques are similar to models used in subsequent chapters. We then discuss our numerical methods of exploding a SN once its degenerate core starts collapsing. We discuss explosive nucleosynthesis and its impact on the progenitor composition, production of unstable isotopes and the basic physics of radioactive decay. In Chapter 3 (Observational properties), we discuss the photometric and spectral observational properties of core-collapse SNe. We extract statistical properties of the existing sample. Using the presented technique, we performed a detailed study of the well observed object SN 2008bk (Chapter 4). We are able to constrain its progenitor and explosion properties. Our modelling allows us to compare not only the basic properties such as luminosity, but also to analyze in detail the spectral features, such as line identification and morphology. We show that a 12 M⊙ star on the main sequence is a good candidate for the progenitor of SN 2008bk. Also we discuss the asymmetric shape of the Hα line and conclude that it stems from the overlap with the strong Ba II 6596.9 A line. SN 2008bk, together with about 20 objects, form a subclass of low-luminosity CCSNe Type II. We devoted a particular attention to this class of objects, whose uniformity and observational data allows us to draw important conclusions. In Chapter 5 (Low-luminosity Type II-P SNe), we study the sample of 17 low-luminosity SNe and analyze the possibility that these events are the result of explosions of low- and high-mass progenitors. There is no solid agreement in the astronomical community on the possible progenitors of the low-luminosity explosions of Type II SNe. Our analysis shows that lower-mass massive stars (~12 M⊙) are good candidates for the progenitors of this subclass of SNe. Moreover, our simulations of high-mass stars (25 and 27 M⊙) show that such low brightness of the explosion of such a massive object would have notable observational properties which are not present in the data. In Chapter 6 (Kinetic energy variation), we extend our study further on the whole class of hydrogen-rich core-collapse SN, using more energetic models than in Chapters 4 and 5. We provide evidences that what differentiates the diversity of SNe II is the explosion energy rather than the ejecta mass (or H-rich envelope mass of the progenitor).
