Abstract: Cerie ion initi ated graft copolymeri zati on of meth yl meth acrylate onto Cal/I/ab is il/dica fi bre has bec n carri cd (lilt. The graft ed copolymers and the ungra ft ed COl/I/ aJJis fib rc havc hcen charal·teri zed by IR spectroscopy, thermal gravimetri c analys is and swelling studies in DM F, water and n-hutanol. The trcnd in the swelling behaviour of the grafted samples (DMF > water> I/ -butanol) is different fro m that obse rved for the ung ral"tcd sall1pie (water > DMF > I/ -but anol). The graft ed sampl es show improved thermal stabilit y in cont rast to un gra fted fihre. The plausibl e mechani sm fo r graft ing react ions is suggested and the ex pl anati on for the trends in grafting pa rameters ~ I re gi vcn.
